“Even better than before!”
Reviewed 13 August 2014

We are returning customers, and found the Inn under new ownership. Everything I expect from a great B&B! Clean, cozy, comfortable bed, super service, beautiful views, spectacular breakfasts, and lots of little extras (ice and filtered water, Keurig coffee maker, snacks in the room with a fridge and microwave if needed)!

Room Tip: Room 9 along back of Inn with great views of Mt. Mansfield.

Going into our 5th year of ownership of the Brass Lantern Inn, it is truly very rewarding to read this review. We thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to get to know you and to learn that we both met our spouses on a bicycle trip!! Wow, the memories of those bike trips were fun to share.

We certainly hope we can have the opportunity to welcome you back to Stowe very soon (though, don't worry, we plan to be here for quite awhile....)!

Thanks so much for your stay and for your review. Both are invaluable to our real and felt success.

Best Regards,
George and Mary Anne

Delightful hosts, tasty breakfast and very comfortable rooms, but the best part of our stay involved sitting in adirondack chairs on the beautiful property of the inn and enjoying coffee and cookies in the evening.

We had not been back to visit the area for over 15 years and chose Stowe to spend a couple of days as we just passed through the last time.

Mary Ann & George are very welcoming hosts, warm and friendly and full of information on where to eat drink in the area.

We booked the Mt. Mansfield room which as the name suggests overlooks the mountain which unfortunately was shrouded in mist! But the room was spacious with a working fireplace and large seating area with coffee table and fridge/microwave/kettle etc if needed. Robes available and plenty of hanging space

A comfy bed and bedding and nice plentiful quality towels in the bathroom, and the rooms were very clean and tidy.

Breakfast was extremely tasty (cooked by George) on our first morning with good quality ingredients. But if you are not a great eater of more sweet sugary breakfasts (as on our 2nd day) you are a tad limited. Cookies and coffee available all day which is a nice touch.

You can sit outside with a glass of something chilled in nice surroundings of the garden as well as there being a hot tub if that’s your thing. Plenty of comfortable seating areas in the house as well, with books/board games and info on the area and beyond. There is also a supermarket just next door as well which is handy for any supply's.

We have stayed in many B&Bs/Inns in the US and although The Brass Lantern Inn may not be the most swish in terms of decoration and luxury fixtures and fittings we would recommend a stay if in the area

We are very flattered to know that we were your choice of B&B in your return, after 15 years, of your first visit to Stowe. We and our small housekeeping staff thank you for your comments regarding a clean and comfortable guest room. That is critical in our goal in providing the "Bed" part of our Bed and Breakfast experience.

Breakfast - as you note, we, as most B&B's, serve a fixed menu breakfast each day. As most B&B's in the U.S. do, we alternate the breakfasts each day between "savory" and "sweet." We do this to give variety to our multi night guests and hopefully give a taste of Vermont as well.

We are so very sorry that you did not feel the comfort to ask us for a savory breakfast on your second morning. As with any morning, and would have been especially easy for us to accommodate on the second morning of your stay during that quiet April weekday, we would have been very happy to provide you with a savory offering of omelet, frittata, etc. if so requested.

We try to make it a point to confirm our guest's breakfast preferences, allergies, dietary restrictions etc. at check in (and before when we have the chance to talk on the phone). We also post the next day's breakfast on the marker board in the dining room each afternoon to allow guests to confirm whether or not this will be to their liking and alerting us otherwise at that time.

We feel that Breakfast, as the second part of our B&B name, is critically important in distinguishing a stay with us versus anywhere else. Sorry, wish we had known your preference for savory only breakfasts and recognizing this now, we will be sure to reinforce this option to guests upon check-in.

And while we are not exactly sure what "swish" accommodations would be defined as, we do, and we are so very appreciative of your comments in support of, work very hard to provide a warm, clean, welcoming and inviting B&B. As we too have had the great fortune of travel, we realize and recognize that we can best serve our guests when we provide them with the level of service and accommodations that we would expect to find and at the price that we would feel most comfortable. Meeting and exceeding our guest's expectations is also critical to our success.

As we have most likely stated in other responses, your comments are truly a gift to us as it helps us fine tune our service . It is so wonderfully rewarding to hear from you that we are hitting so many critical elements or our guest's expectation. Thank you very much for your stay and this review.

Best Regards,
George and Mary Anne

We travel around new England all summer, and always stay at B & B's. The Brass Lantern Inn was a real treat, a lovely historic home in a convenient location with helpful, gracious hosts. I've never seen so many roomy and comfortable common areas in a B & B, both inside and out! Absolutely wonderful, one of the best Inn's we've ever stayed in. The whole Inn was super clean, our room was nicely decorated and very comfortable, and parking was paved and plentiful (we had 2 cars, not a problem). From the initial warm greeting to the scrumptious breakfast, they have an Inn to be very proud of!

We very much appreciate your stay and for sharing your experience here. Always fun to host Vermonters, especially during the Antique and Classic Car Show. And yes, we are very proud and honored to be the Innkeepers of this B&B and so rewarded by your review! Thank You very much.

My wife, daughter and I stayed at the Brass Lantern for two nights in late July. It was our very first time at a B&B. I can’t imagine there being a better one out there.

From the minute we set foot in the front door and met host and owner Mary Anne Lewis (and later her husband George), we were treated like one of the family. She got to know our first names quickly, and called us by name at all times. A charming lady who just loves what she does.

Our room, the Mount Mansfield Room – the inn’s largest, was more than spacious enough for the three of us, well appointed, clean, comfy, and with a stunning view out the back window of the countryside in the foreground framed by Mount Mansfield in the background.

The grounds are beautiful – well kept with flowers of all sorts, a manicured lawn, and several outdoor sitting areas. Inside are several cozy sitting areas equipped with reading material and adorned with New England knick-knacks.

The breakfasts have received rave reviews – as well they should. George is quite the cook, ably supported by Mary Anne in the dining room. We were ready for whatever faced us each morning after filling our stomachs with food you just knew were very fresh and likely from nearby sources. And when we returned later in the day from our excursions, there awaiting us were liquid and munchies refreshments that hit the spot.

We have not traveled to that part of Vermont in some years, so Mary Anne gave us some great ideas on things to do. And she didn’t let us down. Hiking up Mount Mansfield, playing tennis, a leisurely walk to a nice waterfall, where to eat and shop – we enjoyed them all. Stowe has so much to offer, yet retains that New England charm that makes it so attractive. And then on Mary Anne’s advice, we took a leisurely drive through the backroads of Vermont on the way back to Massachusetts rather than make a beeline for the interstate – and are glad we did.

We wish our stay at the Brass Lantern Inn had been longer. This is a superb establishment and managed by a couple seemingly born for the task. It’s exactly as you’ve read from countless reviews before us. We hope to get back there sometime!

Thank you Doonan family for your stay and these very kind words regarding your experience here at the Brass Lantern Inn. On our road trip around New England, we have stayed in Bed And Breakfasts. This is the best. Beautiful grounds with Adirondack chairs. Hummingbirds aplenty. Large room with every amenity including refrigerator, microwave, Keurig, Jacuzzi tub, plenty of outlets, and very comfortable bed and couch. Wonderful cookies, easy parking, and a welcoming innkeeper. The walk to town is a tad long but doable. If you walk up the street a few hundred yards, there is a Shaws Market for all your needs. If you walk past the Shaws on a street that is perpendicular to the main road, you will pass streams (we saw a beaver) and a pumpkin patch. This is a superb B&B and we cannot recommend it too highly.

We love this headline as well. And "incomparable" is a goal we reach for each day as we know our guests have so many choices for where they will call their home away from home. We are fortunate to have this opportunity to thank you again for your stay, you kind words on our behalf and wish you a wonderful rest of your summer.

We hope we can host you again and will keep the hummingbird feeder filled! Ok, maybe not in the winter...

Best to you both,
Mary Anne and George
