“Great Stay- Even Better Breakfast”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 December 2011

I stayed at the lodge with my girlfriend for foliage season that past October. We had such a good time that we have already booked our next visit for ski season in March.

The room was comfy. It was right near the pool and had just been renovated. Really comfy bed, nice new carpet, flatscreen TV and great bathroom. The furniture didn't look brand new but it was still nice.

We didn't use the pool, but it looked new and seemed like it would be fun for kids- with a bridge crossing it. Sauna and hot tub were good and we used them every night. The real highlight of the trip was the breakfast. Was it a gourmet breakfast worthy of a Michelin star?- no, but was it the best complimentary breakfast I have ever had at a reasonably priced hotel?- absolutely. Fresh eggs, pancakes, bacon, potatoes, muffins, scones, bread, cereal, and the chance to enjoy it next to a roaring fire- what more could we want?

The river in the back was really nice. There was actually a wedding out there our first day, but the second day it was quiet so we had a picnic back there on the riverbank.

We live in Mexico now, but have family in New York and are up north a few times a year. Never skied Stowe, but it looks great. We'll be there in March so we'll try to post another review in winter to let you know what thats like.

For dinner, try Trattoria La Festa. Great Italian restaurant right down the road. We were able to eat outside which was nice.

My husband and I stayed here for two nights while traveling through Vermont. We had one of the rooms that was in the separate section from the main lodge, closer to the river. We were able to drive our car right up to the room which was nice. The room was small and very basic. No extras here, not even shampoo, etc. The door did not fit well so it scraped against the carpet and was difficult to close. The room was quiet though. The property was nice, especially being near the river which was so pretty and idyllic. I also liked walking to see the covered bridge which is closer to the next door lodge. (I walked across the lawn between the two lodges and to the back of the next door property which the owner said was okay). The paved bike/walk trail is also near the bridge. I did not see the main lodge rooms but the lodge itself is old and a little dilapidated. It was my understanding that the owners are fairly new and are in the process of fixing the place up. The owner seemed pleasant, although not real friendly. I ate breakfast here one morning and it was quite good. The muffins were homemade (still in the baking pans) and very good. There was also eggs, breakfast meats, breads, drinks, etc. Unlike some hotels, the breakfast room was quite large, plenty of room to sit. So all in all, the place is fine, just not great. I would probably try a different lodging if in the area again.

Hi MSWMom50,

Thanks so much for taking the time to review our Lodge. As you mentioned, we are new owners and are working hard to transform the Northern Lights Lodge to provide Stowe's best affordable accomodations. Guest satisfaction is our number one priority, and feedback from valued guests like you is really helpful.

We are glad to hear that you enjoyed our breakfast and spending time by our riverside. We do try to keep our rates as affordable as possible, so we are not able to offer some of the amenities you might see at a luxury hotel such as valet parking or newspapers delivered to your room each morning, but we of course offer the basics such as soap, shampoo, and conditioner. It sounds like our housekeepers must have missed these when they were restocking your room. We are really sorry about this and had we known about it while you were here with us, we would have immediately brought those items to your room. We have instituted a new housekeeping checklist with our staff in order to make sure this doesn't happen in the future.

Thank you for letting us know about the problem with the door. We are sorry for the inconvenience, and if we had known about it earlier, we certainly would have fixed it immediately. Just like in a home, the changing of the seasons sometimes makes doors swell or shrink a bit and can push them a hair out of alignment. We are actually closed for the month of November so we can perform more great upgrades to the Lodge, so we used this opportunity to have our carpenters check every door in the lodge and make any necessary adjustments.

We do hope you reconsider your decision to stay with us in the future, and we will try our hardest to exceed all of your expectations. We always try hard to make all of our guests feel that this is their home away from home.

I stayed at the lodge in Feb of 2011. It was awesome. We arrived much earlier than planned and although our room was not ready then, the innkeepers told us to come back in an hour. We went and had lunch. Arrived back at the lodge not only to a immaculate room but an upgrade as well. The room was clean. The bathroom was clean. We did not notice one thing that would be off putting. The pool was great and so was the hot tub. The breakfast was everything you could possibly want to eat before hitting the slopes for the day. We did unfortunalty have to leave a day early due to a big storm coming in which was very dissapointing. All and all this was a great stay for the money. I am in the process of booking now to Jan/Feb 2012!

We stayed here in Oct, 2011. The best part of our stay was the fabulous breakfast. Scrambled eggs, sausage, waffles, scones, muffins, cereal etc. There was even a fireplace in the breakfast room which made it very cozy. The rooms were clean and beds comfortable. My only complaint would be that it was a bit noisy. We had the fan running to cover up background noise (we always do that) and we could still hear people walking through the hall and doors closing. It wasn't bad and I would stay here again. Thus the 4* instead of 5*. Very pleasant owners.

Upon arriving at the hotel we were a bit disappointed at the look of the property as it looked a bit un-loved. The entrance wasnt very prominent and when we checked in the owner wasnt very welcoming and all felt a bit flat. However, our room was comfortable, if a bit rustic, and the facilities were ok. Breakfast was good with a good selection of food on offer.

All in all this was an average budget hotel but would make all the difference if a bit of work was done on the appearance of the hotel and reception.

Hi Andy and Liz,

Thank you for taking the time to review the hotel on Tripadvisor. Guest satisfaction is extremely important to us and feedback from valued guests like yourselves is very helpful in making sure future guests have the best experience possible.

We were glad to read that you found your room comfortable and enjoyed our breakfast. We are sorry that you were disappointed with our grounds. As new owners, we have been working hard over the last year to renovate and improve the lodge. For our first year, we have primarily focused on improving our guest rooms and public areas inside the building. We have done some significant landscaping on our riverside, which has met with very positive feedback from our guests, but we have not yet had the opportunity to re-landscape the grounds around our entrance. Within a few weeks, there will be a snowy white blanket covering our property, but in the spring we will be hard at work giving the rest of our grounds the love they deserve and make the front entrance even more welcoming.

We always work hard to make our guests feel that this is their home away from home, and at checkin we try to give guests the type of personal attention you would expect at a B&B, including suggestions for sight seeing and dining options in the area so guests can make the most of their time in Stowe. We are sorry if in any way we made you feel unwelcome at checkin. Perhaps you arrived at a busy time when there was a large group of people trying to check in at the same time and in our effort to keep people from waiting in line for long, we weren't able to give you the same level of personal attention that we try to offer to all of our guests. We do sincerely apologize for this.

We hope you do consider the lodge for a future visit to Stowe, and we promise to give you a warm reception, and if you visit us in the summer time after the snow has left us, we think you'll be very pleasantly surprised by the landscaping.

We stayed here the last wknd of September...pretty good leaf-peeping time. We stayed in the efficiency (aka "munchkin" room). The room was definitely small and older, (we expected that as it stated it right on their website), but it was adequate and we weren't in the room that often. The pool, hot tub and sauna were great! Very clean and they do a good job of keeping the towels stocked. The breakfast was definitely a bonus... a lot of places will charge extra for that feature and they put on a decent buffet to get your day started right.

I would most definitely stay here again and would recommend it to friends and family. If you're looking for the Hilton, this place is not for you. It is not a 5 star resort and they don't claim to be, but for the money they keep a clean hotel with really great amenities!

We had an efficiency apt located near the river which was a charming setting. The apt had everything we needed and the main bed was fantastic, the others just fine. It was nice to have a full bathroom, internet wireless connection and breakfast included. We had a medical emergency during our stay and one of our party needed emergency care. Michael and Shannon assisted with the arrangements and went out of their way to assist us. We were overwhelmed by their kindness and concern. Aside from practical assistance contacting and reaching the hospital, they made special arrangements for breakfast and when we had to stay over an extra night they included us in their stay 3 and the 4th night is free, so we were not charged for the extra night. We cannot thank them enough for their help and kindness. Barb Murphy, Ottawa, Canada
