The staff are what made this place so memorable. The floors creak, it’s a little worn, because it’s a historic railroad era hotel. The rooms are comfortable and well kept. Well organized, loads of character. Free local bus and down the street from the Ctr for Cartoon Studies. There are two communal kitchen and one laundry room. Also a parking lot out back. A welcoming lobby, wifi, a toasty fireplace. The Tip Top Café was excellent, perfect before seeing a show at Northern Stage. It’s a great place to start out from if you are exploring the nearby towns or farms of VT NH and MA. Bakery with really good bagels and soups for the winter is a couple doors down. If you get one of the two room suites, it’s a lot more room. I rather liked hearing the train in the distance.

Front desk is not friendly, very distant, barely nice. Room was dirty, window ledges and baseboards were dirty and dead bugs were in the corners. Water wasn't working, then was brown, then wouldn't drain. Beds felt institutional. Would not stay here again.

Room Tip: Probably would stay at a chain hotel in this area. There wasn't much available with good reviews...

The rooms are huge! The hallway to the laundry room is more than rustic! The toilet ran continuously.
We we did not find the quaint shops and fine dining. Much of the town was closed up in September. The best part of White River Junction was watching the migrating butterflies! the coffee house right down the street was closed on Sunday.Frankly, we were disappointed in both the hotel and the community. Lots of smokers hanging on the streets. It was just OK, but barely so.

The hotel is very early 20th century, lots of character. The age of the building does not detract from the stay. We had a "suite", really what was once two rooms with a shared bath. The bed was surprisingly comfortable and the linens and blankets crisp and clean. The sitting room was a hodge podge of furniture, some of which was worn, filthy and food stained. Small fridge, and a crazy rotating showerhead in the bathroom. Surprising amounts of neighborhood noise at all hours for such a small town, and be prepared for the Amtrak train LOUD switching of cars at 3 AM.

having stayed in older hotels over the years, i do think this hotel isn't too bad.
however, given it's proximity to hanover nh ( a tad ritzi maybe, and that's coming from someone who lives in fairfield county ct) i think a little face lift could reap substantial
benefits and could really draw a crowd !!!! there are a couple of great restaurants in town,
and needless to say amtrac across the street could make this an off the beat destination!

My wife and four of our friends did a bicycle tour around northern New England in June of 2011. As much as possible we stayed in small cities/large towns with town center hotels. If possible we were looking for towns and hotels with a bit of character. In that regard White River Junction and the Coolidge Hotel did not disappoint. The Coolidge is an older hotel, and it is looking its age. But it wears its age fairly well, and the rooms are clean and the beds comfortable. The staff was friendly and welcoming, which, when you show up on a bicycle looking a little worn down from the road, is not always the case.

For a touring cyclist, one of the important points of a hotel is where they let you store your bike. Secure and covered are the important attributes. At the Coolidge they have a locked basement off the parking lot that was available for bike storage. It was a bit dungeon-like, but it was covered, locked, and the staff that bike commute stored their bikes there as well. It worked.

If you want your bed turned down and a mint on the pillow and are concerned about thread counts do not stay here. The Coolidge was built to serve rail travelers and yes there is the occasional freight train whistle in the night. Amtrak pulls in at supper time. Rooms are clean and quiet and have some real character. They are some nice suites. When you leave the hotel you find yourself not in a parking lot but in a real place, White River Junction. Here you find the famed Tucker Box Cafe, the Polka Dot Diner and and a couple of good restaurants. If you like the paintings of Edward Hopper you will like the Coolidge and WRJ.
