“Perfect setting for our engagement”
Reviewed 24 October 2010

I needed a setting that would be perfect for our engagement. I asked the owners to have the room prepared upon our arrival in order for me to propose the moment that we walked in. It all hinged on them .... and they came through!!! It was perfect!!! The room was beautiful. Fireplace in the room, plenty of wood to keep it going and the view from the room .... looking down into the town and seeing the mountains in the background. The breakfast was included and great!!! We had dinner there one night, the price seemed high at first but after we tasted our food we would have paid more!!! Location is great right outside of Wilmington, a very cute town. A must try!!

The White House has a commanding location and some beautiful rooms for guest use we were given a different room from the one we booked - this was an 'upgrade' it had a lovely view ,nice decor and a comfortable bed. Stacey, the owner, was helpful and even did some washing for us.Our biggest disappointment came from the restaurant - the waitress was cool, haughty and unfriendly to the point of rudeness, if there had been an alternative we may have walked out, our food was good, portion on the small side and expensive considering the area and other local dining options, the dining room was also freezing - the only other occupied table had to eat with their coats on!!!

We arrived and received a very cold glance. Actually had to chase someone down to help us. Our room was paid in advance so we stayed, the place was not really like the pictures. There were spiders all over the dusty rooms, bathrooms were not clean. We felt watched for the two days we were there. Not friendly to children. Drinks were sky high and everytime we ordered the amount went up by .50 cents. At most you had to wait for the sometimes barhelp. When the staff was quietly requested to help us, eyes began to roll. The only thing decent about the stay was the food. SO, DON"T DO IT!!! It's too expensive.

What a beautiful and quaint hotel. I travelled on business and was welcomed warmly by the owner. The service was exceptional and personal, just what you need when preparing for a business meeting, nothing seemed too much trouble for them. I was taken by the position of the hotel and the views from the terraces whilst the sun set in front of you was breathtaking.
The wine list was excellent and Phil, an Englishman abroad, has exceptional knowledge and is very keen to regale you with stories of wines around the world (a sort of modern day Noel Coward).
The rooms were clean and very comfortable and all the staff wanted to make my stay a very pleasurable experience. The Inn is over a hundred years old and if you are looking for a marble and wood faceless hotel do not choose this. If however you want character, excellent service and good food, with views to die for then this is a stunning choice.

Dead bugs on the steps walking up to the room, mold in the tub under the bath mat, our feet were black from walking in the room barefoot, broken saddle between rooms with exposed rusty nails, toilet seat needed to be replaced it was old and scratched. Room faced Route 9 and it was very noisy at night, the sound of the trucks breaking as they came down the hill kept us up all night. Like I said, the inn looks fabulous on the web site, but for the amount of money it certainly does not justify the price.

The Inn is just lovely. Though hard to believe, It was once a former home! It sits atop a hill and views of the mountains around can be seen from the various terraces. The room we had was large, beautifully furnished and air conditioned! I caught a glimpse of other rooms and they were all handsome. The breakfasts were satisfying, as was the quick light dinner we had. The bar seemed well stocked, and the innkeeper --a wine expert--carefully selects his wines (I overheard him talking with a wine merchant, he was in the process of tasting some new wines for purchase).

Stacey, the lady of the house could not have been more helpful, and thoughtful. I was feeling under the weather my last day there. A knock on my door, and there was Stacey with a tray of white raspberries, and blueberries (both grow on the property and she had just picked them --delicious!), and an iced coffee. I will never forget her kindness.

From the moment we arrived (greeted with a nasty "may I help you?") to the room (small, dark, no airconditioning, very tiny bath room) to dinner (untrained waitress, modest food) to miserable breakfast (how can you ruin a poached egg?) lack of staff one morning (hostess had to waitress and cook for 14 people) the experience was awful. The owner bought the place 18 months ago and seems to regret her decision by being un-welcoming to her guests. She also is chintzy (buys cheap grape jelly for breakfast) which is not appropriate for the prices she is charging. Everyone we talked with had the same impression so it was not just us.
