Description: As old as the hills . . . The Peaks of Otter have drawn settlers and travelers to the region for more than 8,000 years. The community whose vestiges remain to be explored today had its beginning in 1766 when Thomas Wood arrived from Pennsylvania. The wife of one of Wood’s descendants would open her home as the area’s first lodging for travelers in 1834. By the late 1800s, Peaks of Otter would be home to some 20 families, a school, a church, and a resort hotel. In the mid 1900s, the location was selected for special attention as the National Parks Service developed recreation and service areas along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Abbott Lake was constructed and the Peaks of Otter Lodge opened in 1964.Today, we invite you to be part of the future of this storied natural and cultural destination as it continues to attract visitors and travelers in the 21st century.

Food and service were OK, but far from outstanding. Views over lake and mountains, however, were great. Restaurant is pretty basic as to menu and atmosphere, but typical for someplace that likely provides service to tour bus loads of people. Scenery is the draw, not the dining experience.

We went to dinner with our usual dinner bunch on a Wed night. The dining room was nearly empty. The view of the lake and the Blue Ridge was wonderful. The menu was very limited. Two of us ordered the fried chicken which was slightly on the greasy side but good flavor. The others ordered turkey which was supposed to be all white meat. There was none. Each plate was stacked with dark meat. By the time it was corrected, the meal was out of sync. There were lots of apologies but not putting out what's on the menu is inexcusable. The restaurant is under a new contract. The location and past reputation will only carry so far. My recommendation is go for a walk around the lake and bring a picnic lunch. Not inexpensive and not worth it.

Spent one night at the lodge while passing through the area, Dinner fare was average (pecan crusted trout). This review is all about the dessert we had....created and recommended by our server, Shawn Lee. Warm chocolate cake, raspberry purée and chocolate syrup topped with blackberry ice cream and whipped cream. More than enough to share but you will not want to. Undoubtedly one of the best desserts I have ever had, anywhere. Period,

Ate here on Sunday for lunch buffet. Was family expensive for breakfast (16.95) but that was my choice. For one price you can select from breakfast items or lunch items on buffet. Also had waffle and omelet station. Half dozen selections for dessert. Drink included in price. Food was okay but nothing actually stood out as memorable except the wonderful view of the lake.

Beautiful View of the Lake from the restaurant. The service was a little slow due to quite a few guests using the restaurant.
