Description: As old as the hills . . . The Peaks of Otter have drawn settlers and travelers to the region for more than 8,000 years. The community whose vestiges remain to be explored today had its beginning in 1766 when Thomas Wood arrived from Pennsylvania. The wife of one of Wood’s descendants would open her home as the area’s first lodging for travelers in 1834. By the late 1800s, Peaks of Otter would be home to some 20 families, a school, a church, and a resort hotel. In the mid 1900s, the location was selected for special attention as the National Parks Service developed recreation and service areas along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Abbott Lake was constructed and the Peaks of Otter Lodge opened in 1964.Today, we invite you to be part of the future of this storied natural and cultural destination as it continues to attract visitors and travelers in the 21st century.

“Disappointed”
Reviewed 5 July 2014

We were disappointed with our visit to the Peaks of Otter Restaurant this time. We like to go here to enjoy the views of the lake and the Peaks. The service was much slower than usual and not very attentive. The food was OK but not the best and seems a little overpriced for what you get. We really want to see this place do well as it is a great spot on the Parkway.

“Let Down”
Reviewed 5 July 2014

I really wanted to like this restaurant. The dining room overlooks a lake with Sharp Top Mountain in the background. The hostess and waiter were very friendly. It was clean looking and that’s important to me. But I was not happy with the food. The oysters were terrible and the shrimp had no flavor. My friend had the catfish and wasn’t happy either. To make matters worse the price is not cheap. We spent $60 on dinner and drank only one cup of coffee and water.

“Total tranquility”
Reviewed 30 June 2014

If you want a quiet (really REALLY quiet) evening, this is the place to stay. Everything about the lodge is outstanding, if maybe a bit dated. We came for our anniversary, will be back for many more.

Ordered prime rib, medium. It was well done, ate anyway because did not want to wait to order something else. It was terrible and at $25.00 each, my wife and I left very unhappy after registering a compliant

“A special place with average food”
Reviewed 22 June 2014

This is a very special place that you should not pass up. No, it's not a gourmet dinner, but there are plenty of items on the menu to enjoy. The food is good, but taste even better in this location. The staff is local friendly hard working people, they and their manager will do everything they can to make your stay and dinner enjoyable. Relax and enjoy a dinner and a stay in this very special place.
