Description: As old as the hills . . . The Peaks of Otter have drawn settlers and travelers to the region for more than 8,000 years. The community whose vestiges remain to be explored today had its beginning in 1766 when Thomas Wood arrived from Pennsylvania. The wife of one of Wood’s descendants would open her home as the area’s first lodging for travelers in 1834. By the late 1800s, Peaks of Otter would be home to some 20 families, a school, a church, and a resort hotel. In the mid 1900s, the location was selected for special attention as the National Parks Service developed recreation and service areas along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Abbott Lake was constructed and the Peaks of Otter Lodge opened in 1964.Today, we invite you to be part of the future of this storied natural and cultural destination as it continues to attract visitors and travelers in the 21st century.

Casual dining on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Service was acceptable but not really attentive. Food was good but slow to come even though the place was not crowded. Given the location, would recommend if your in the area but would not travel far.

We went to the Peaks of Otter restaurant on a Tuesday, after a brief hike on Sharp Top. We arrived at the restaurant at 3:00 pm, and waited 10 minutes to be seated. When no one showed up to seat us, we seated ourselves. I immediately observed two waitstaff talking to each other. They never even looked up from their conversation or noticed that anyone had walked in. After a full 7 minutes, they began walking towards the middle of the dining room, but they were still talking. Finally a third waitstaff person came to our table and, with a heavy Spanish accent, muttered to us about needing to wipe the table. We sat back and let her clean the table up. She continued to mutter to us, but she did not speak clearly or look at us, and neither of us could understand a word she said. We then waited, again, for waitstaff to come and take our order, or at least greet us. Nothing. Several waitstaff walked by our table, back and forth, but no one stopped, greeted us, or even offered us water. After enduring 10 MORE minutes of this nonsense, we got up and left the restaurant.

This lack of service is COMPLETELY unacceptable. We will never go back again. There is NO excuse for such shoddy treatment.

Food is a little pricey, but the view is worth it! Overlooks the lake and is on the Blue Ridge Parkway. We had lunch on this visit and everything was very good!
