This is the greatest aviation museum on the planet. They have everything from the Space Shuttle to a P-51. The place is clean and very well laid out. It is a lot of walking but well worth it.

Ask about the free walking your as soon as you arrive! Mr. Lee Boyd, a retired veteran pilot, did an excellent job describing and explaining the various planes, shuttle, escape pods, missiles, etc. I would have wandered around missing out on so much!

Visited here while living in Maryland and would recommend it to anyone. Very informative and fascinating to see some of the aircraft! A must see!

While indulging my lifelong interest in aircraft I’ve visited the National Museum of the United States Air Force (Dayton), Smithsonian’s National Air & Space Museum (Washington, DC), the National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force (Savannah), the Wright Brothers Memorial (Kitty Hawk), and a number of other museums, monuments, memorials, and other sites where aircraft are exhibited as a central or associated purpose. I thought I had pretty much seen it all until I visited the Udvar-Hazy Center. Wow! Now I can see what all the fuss is about. You’d have to be pretty jaded to tour this place and come away unimpressed with this collection and the enormous hanger in which it is ensconced.

Hats off to the Smithsonian Institution for making this incredibly diverse collection of historic and modern aircraft and spacecraft from all over the world available for public viewing in one place, and with no admission charge. (That hefty $15 parking fee is forgivable; the Smithsonian is forbidden to charge admission fees, so it has to get the moolah somehow, wink-wink.) The docents who guide the tours also deserve special mention. Ours worked very hard, even taking time to give Colorado Jim and me a special tour of the German WW II war birds after the regular tour was over.

This place is worth the drive. Located past Dulles Airport, this museum displays the extensive collection in a breathtaking setting. Air and Space is suitable for all ages. Be prepared to be wowed by the displays; this is the real thing from early flight to space travel.
For older kids, the rides are a must!
