My wife and I have been patronizing bed and breakfasts for the past four years, since we had our initial B&B experience on our first wedding anniversary. We've enjoyed stays at B&Bs in Virginia, South Carolina, Florida, Pennsylvania, British Columbia and Alberta, Canada.
My wife and I arrived at Peace Hill just before 6:00 p.m on Saturday, June 19, 2010, for a single night wedding anniversary get-away. Mike and Tanya greeted us in the driveway and offered to help us with our overnight bags. Their warm greeting and welcoming demeanor put us at ease immediately. We have had many very positive B&B experiences (and one very mediocre one) and it was clear from the beginning that our time at the Bed and Breakfast at Peace Hill was going to be memorable.
After a brief tour of the house, Mike and Tanya offered us a snack - a tray with cold cuts, cheese, olives, crackers, etc. Since we had 8:00 p.m. dinner reservations in Williamsburg, we were glad to have a little something to tide us over until then. After we finished our snack, Mike and Tanya suggested we try the screened-in porch before settling in. We followed them to the back of the house and enjoyed the early evening summer sun while chatting with our hosts.
We enjoyed our conversation with Mike and Tanya so much, we barely had time to rush upstairs and dress for dinner.
After dinner we returned to the comforts of the Charles City Room and got a great night's sleep. We had previously told Mike and Tanya that we would like breakfast at 8:00 a.m. I showered and dressed and went downstairs to enjoy the screened-in porch again, while my wife got ready for the day.
At precisely 8:00 we peaked into the dining room and saw the table set for two (we were the only guests that night). Moments after we sat down, Mike came in from the kitchen with a steaming serving dish of hash browns, followed by scrambled eggs, bacon, strawberries and blackberries, and absolutely delicious, home-made scones. There was more than enough of everything for two and we weren't shy about showing how much we enjoyed everything - especially the unbelievable scones, hot out of the oven (heart-shaped in honor of our wedding anniversary)!
Toward the end of breakfast, Mike and Tanya joined us for another delightful chat. They encouraged us to take as much time as we wanted to enjoy the porch or the grounds before leaving. Unfortunately, we wanted to get home to our 18-month-old daughter as soon as possible (this was our first night away from her since she was born). We told them we would have to leave as soon as we could pack our bags. Before we went upstairs to pack, Mike and Tanya presented us with a small bag with some left-over scones for us to take with us.
We enjoyed every minute of our stay at the Bed and Breakfast at Peace Hill. We couldn't have asked for more gracious hosts or a more relaxing hide-away. We will definitely be spending more time there in the future.
