We wanted to go somewhere for a long weekend and after looking around at other B&B's in the area we chose this Inn. Our first impression was how homey this place is. It feels comfortable, much more so than a hotel! The staff are very helpful and friendly. The owner is just as nice and always checked to make sure we were having a good time. The wrap around porch is perferct for relaxing and to meet other people. The home baked goods available every day, all day long and are delicious! The wine and cheese in the afternoon is a perfect way to unwind after a day of touring the beautiful area. The rooms are comfortable and cozy - Only bad thing (if you can call it a bad thing) is the TV in the room is difficult to see while lounging in bed and the train that runs at the back at the property. But, after a few times the train becomes part of the ambience of the place. Will definately go back and will recommend to others!

I was in Charlottesville for two nights on a business trip and wanted to stay somewhere close to the downtown area. 200 South Street Inn is a perfect location: it's close to both the downtown pedestrian mall and the University of Virginia campus. When I arrived I was greeted by one of the nice innkeepers and treated to some homemade cookies! The cookies are fantastic and are available day and night. I stayed in one of the cottages that is separated from the main building. The room was so nice and homey! It had a large antique chiffarobe to hang clothes in and a very comfortable bed. The bathroom was very large and featured a large sunken jacuzzi tub/shower combination. I felt very much at home in the room, and it was very quiet. I enjoyed the complimentary wine and cheese both afternoons.
Also, the breakfast was excellent! It consisted of fresh fruit, homemade breads and muffins, and fresh juice. It is served in the library of the inn; the room is quite conducive to socializing with other guests and is very comfortable.
The location of the inn is very convenient to restaurants, shops, a movie theater, and music clubs. It's great to be able to walk to places and not have to drive everywhere. I loved the large front porch that runs the length of the house! I sat out on the porch both nights and relaxed.
This is a great inn: reasonably priced, such friendly innkeepers, great location, and nice touches (cookies, wine and cheese, and breakfast). Did I mention how good the cookies are?
I would definitely recommend 200 South Street Inn to any travellers who want to experience Downtown Charlottesville in a comfortable and interesting atmosphere! I hope to be back!

Let me first say this: the people at this Inn are amazingly nice. They had our heater fixed within hours and even made a pot of coffee for us on a rainy afternoon.

But there were a few things that, for us, didn't make it worth the price. They include:
* the train! We had a heart attack 2x per night when the train ran DIRECTLY behind the Inn and went on for at least 10 minutes
* the general state of the Inn feels a little... used? Or just not fresh? Cracks in the ceiling, old furniture in the breakfast room, etc.
* parking was an issue Saturday night when there were too many cars for all the guests to have a spot

That said, it's insanely close to downtown and has a lovely front porch. Pros and cons, but for us the price was too much for a repeat trip.

My husband and I were driving from NJ to TX and made a stop in Charlottesville during our roadtrip. We wanted to stay close to downtown so I searched a few B&B's downtown. I'm so glad we decided to stay at 200 South Street Inn! We made it in time to checkin around 5PM and took advantage of the complimentary wine and cheese hour! We enjoyed some wine and cheese on the porch before we settled in and it was just lovely and so relaxing! Also, the Inn is only 2 short blocks from the downtown square so the location couldn't be more convenient. We stayed in room #4 I believe, it is their smallest room under the kitchen. Even though it was the smallest room, we had everything we needed and that room also has a private entrance off the side of the house, so it was nice not having to walk thru the house to get to our room. The complimentary breakfast was icing on the cake the next morning. There was such a great selection of breakfast items, it was really nice to relax and sit in the garden to dine. We hope to visit the Inn again and would HIGHLY reccommend it for your stay! Thanks for the memories! ~The Tower's

We had a last minute trip to Charlottesville, and were able to get into the South Street Inn. Additionally, they were having a sale so the room was reduced from the normal price. We stayed in the annex house, across the parking lot from the main house, and had a nicely appointed queen bed room with a huge bathroom. Upon arriving, we were offered a bottle of wine and homemade cookies, to make up for the fact that we'd arrived after their cocktail hour-- very nice touch and delicious cookies!! Breakfast in the morning was also nice, nothing too elaborate, but some homemade breads, yogurt, fruit, etc...everything we needed. Private parking, and easy walking distance to the downtown area with shops, restaurants, etc.

My only negative comments would be:
-The train runs directly behind this property, which we were warned of when we booked our room. It didn't really bother us, but I could imagine it would be tough for those who are light sleepers.
-Our room was quite stuffy, and we had the AC on-- it wasn't all that hot outside so I imagine that in the heat of summer it would be pretty warm if the AC wasn't working better than it was when we were there.

All in all, a great little spot and a place we'd gladly return to!

We received a wedding invitation that suggested two hotels in the area. Instead of going with the suggestions, we looked into bed & breakfasts. It was the best decision ever! Though the Omni was more expensive (even with the group rate), our room and experience was so much more of a better value. The very friendly staff offers wine, cheese when we arrived late in the evening. The breakfast was varied and fresh with fruits, packaged yogurts, baked goods, coffee, fresh squeezed OJ, teas, & cereals. Our room was small & tastefully decorated, with a hot tub in the large bathroom.

We recently spent two nights here while spending a weekend with our daughter who is a student at UVA. The buildings (a main house and a slightly smaller "cottage") are furnished with antiques and oriental rugs, but feel comfortable and inviting, without the museum feel of some B&Bs. Warm hospitality included freshly-baked cookies, and white wine, cheese and fruit provided in the evening. Off-street parking was very convenient and secure, and staff were quick to respond to any requests (hair dryer, extra blanket). When some families with young children arrived on the second day, the Inn's management surprised us with a free upgrade to a larger room in a quiet area of the main house (equipped with a gas fireplace and a flat panel TV). Free WiFi was provided in both buildings.

Light sleepers may be startled by freight trains passing (very slowly) just beyond the garden fence. The breakfast buffet included excellent homemade scones and a generous variety of coffee cakes, yogurt, fruit, boiled eggs, juices, etc. The main building has a huge terrace along two sides, with rocking chairs and plenty of side tables, as well as garden furniture on the lawn below. It's a relaxing place to enjoy a glass of wine and a nice assortment of cheeses.

There are many restaurants a short walk away, especially along the "downtown mall" which is just two short blocks downhill from the Inn, and the UVA campus is a short drive away. Another good option is the free trolley service (Charlottesville Area Transit, CAT) which runs late into the night during the week, but stops at 5:30 on Sundays. Just across the street is a farm market on Saturday mornings. When not occupied most of the Inn's rooms are left open so that you can enjoy the eclectic collection of paintings, rugs and antique furniture, and the breakfast room includes game tables and a generous assortment of books. The cleaning staff were efficient and friendly but not intrusive, and a broken light switch in our room was quickly repaired.

All in all, this was a very relaxing visit, and we would gladly return.
