in 1993 we arrived on our wedding night, just a bit tipsy...found champagne waiting for us and enjoyed - only to realize it was NOT for us, but another couple, oops, too late...we shared it over a recap of our wonderful days events and shared tears of joy, and oops again, a broken champagne flute! ...20 years later, i made secret reservations for my husband and I... he thought my surprise was where we were going for dinner...he was pleasantly surprised at arriving at the South Street Inn! We enjoyed their routine evening of wine and cheese, then the champagne waiting for us in the room...the staff was GREAT and played along with our memories, had champagne on ice with a note congratulating us on our anniversary - addressed to another couple!!! We managed not to break any glasses this time!!

The Inn staff do a wonderful job setting up a warm and welcoming feel for the wine and cheese as well as the morning breakfast...very enjoyable to mixing with other guests, and still have space on the porch or gardens to be alone...rocking on the front porch is relaxing!! We've staying in 2 different rooms now, each unique and enjoyable.

The service and amenities were just as good 20 years later...consistency and quality!

Room Tip: room 11 is at the top of many stairs, but if your knees can handle the climb, it is worth it...very private, quiet and had a charming little nook with a table and chairs near the window!

We enjoyed 4 nights. The building and rooms are old but have character and all is well maintained for its age. Service was helpful and friendly. Breakfast was good, including freshly squeezed orange juice, breads, cereals, greek yogurt, but some may miss the lack of cooked food. Wine and cheese early evening was lovely and there was always fresh fruit and home-made cookies. Freight trains come past the back of the building every few hours, even at night, and can be a bit loud, but can be drowned out by the noisy a/c!! Charlottesville and the surrounding areas were a delight to visit. We will definitely recommend 200 South Street to friends and hope to visit again.

If you want to spend $200-$250 plus a night for a room near the Mall in C-ville, you have some other choices.
If you want a GOOD VALUE for LESS, STAY at 200 South Street Inn!
Nice, clean and comfortable room with all MEP systems working fine for its age.
We had a very enjoyable happy hour with wine, fruit, a variety of cheese & crackers. Continental Breakfast was good- homemade granola, cerals, yogurt, fruit, homemade specialty breads and juices plus strong coffee. As most agree, location is very good and convenient, just two blocks from the Mall. I found the staff to be very accomodating and professional.
Will not hesitate to stay here again in the future.

We were driving from NYC to NC and did a pit stop in Cville.

The rooms could use an update. The bathroom in particular.

The service at the front desk was amateurish but well meaning enough.

The location is very good – walkable to good places downtown. That was why we picked this place.

Overall a perfectly fine experience but nothing special.

Stayed here 4 nights-room was very comfortable and the innkeepers were great. 'Wine thirty' in the afternoon was a great treat, although a red would be nice :-). The breakfast was just ok- fruit, coffee, fresh squeezed orange juice was delicious. Cold cereal and and fresh baked breads, but, can a brother get an egg? Would stay here again.
