“Nice inn, could use better cleaning”
Reviewed 10 September 2013

While visiting Charlottesville, we spent two nights at the inn. It is well-situated (smack in the middle of downtown) and nicely appointed with a great wrap-around porch and good breakfast. But when we checked in, it was fairly obvious that the bathroom had not been cleaned (or perhaps it was given a very fast cleaning). The floor was grimy, there was hair in the sink, etc. I pointed this out to the manager the next morning, and she assured me they would thoroughly clean the bathroom. I was surprised, then, to return to the room in the evening to find that the room had not been cleaned at all (unmade bed, etc.). I understand that at B&Bs it's necessary to lower some expectations, but this was not acceptable. Based on this experience, I would caution prospective guests, and I certainly would not myself stay here again.

Thank you for letting us know about your stay with us. We do pride ourselves in the housekeeping department and we apologize for letting you down in that area. At 200 South Street Inn, we hold ourselves to a very high standard of cleanliness. After speaking with the staff on duty the morning of your stay, there may have been some miscommunication between the front desk and the housekeeper about your bathroom. I'm sorry your room wasn't refreshed. As standard procedure, we do not refresh rooms that have a Do Not Disturb sign on the door. I suspect this is the reason why your room was not refreshed.

I'm glad that you noticed our newly renovated Veranda! We have just completed restoring, painting and installing a new ceiling complete with fans for our guests to enjoy. Having Breakfast and Wine and Cheese in the afternoon are the perfect times to relax on the porch.

I hope that you will stay with us another time so you will experience the high quality of service that our guests enjoy at our Inn.

My husband and I were visiting Monticello and decided to stay a night at 200 South Street Inn. While listed as a hotel in Trip Advisor, it's more of a larger-sized Bed and Breakfast as each room is unique and the stay includes breakfast.

Bottom line - everything about the stay was fantastic. The location is perfect...just 2 blocks from the pedestrian mall and easy driving distance anywhere around town. The staff were all very welcoming, and the room (we stayed in Room 5) was large, well air-conditioned, and had a large whirlpool tub. It's also located right on the main floor near the breakfast area and faced the street. Breakfast consisted of cereals, homemade granola, and several homemade breads, and of course juice and coffee. The granola and breads were good...nothing spectacular, but very solid.

One thing that many reviewers have mentioned is the train tracks that run behind the house...and the fact that overnight trains may disrupt sleep. I can say definitively that this did not happen to us.

I highly recommend this hotel/B&B for any stay in Charlottesville.

Room Tip: Room 5 was quiet. Try to choose a room that faces the street versus one that is in the back of the...

I have found this to be a very nice place to host business guests in Charlottesville. It's very convenient to the Downtown Mall and lots of restaurants. There's really no need to rent a car when our business guests stay here, which keeps things simple. The rooms are very nice, the staff have always been great, and everyone enjoys the wine and cheese after work. I've had multiple colleagues stay here and will continue to in the future.

We only stayed 1 night on our way to NC. The location was perfect, as the farmers market was right outside the door and we would have missed it otherwise.Great breakfast, very friendly staff! Would recommend this place to a friend.

We had a fun time at the South Street Inn. The staff was great and very helpful in advising on places to see and dine. I would definitely come back. We travel frequently and places like this are why! Word of advice...reserve early and get the rooms with a suite sitting room:) That way, one of you can work or watch tv while the other sleeps:) Also, it was very convenient to all the places to go and see. Lots of dining, drinking and shopping just out the front door.

Room Tip: Get any of the rooms with a separate sitting area. We loved room 9!

We stayed for six nights. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. Our room was lovely if a bit cramped. The train goes by several times each night, but with the AC running, it didn't bother us. You can drop out the front door and have hundreds of wonderful choices for places to eat, shop, walk, etc. The breakfast was good but without variation (yogurts, granola, fruit, cakes, bread). The many porches and terraces to enjoy really added to our experience.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with more space to hang out (will be more expensive, of course) -- we had one chair...

We stayed here as part of a bicycle trip in the area and were delighted with the Inn and it's staff.
As others have mentioned, the location is very convenient to the Mall and the University. The Continental breakfast offered enough choices for a cold buffet. The wine and cheese in the late afternoon was a definite plus. Can't comment on value since the room was included in our tour price. The only negatives were that our room (21) was quite dark and had no drawer space. However, there were many pleasant common outdoor areas. Agree with those who said the Inn could use some maintenance work. The porch in our part of the cottage needed some refinishing and the wall of our room could have done with a touch up. They need to fix the parking situation too. There are not enough spaces for all the rooms so it could get dicey if you return late at night.
However, these are very minor blemishes and our overall experience was very positive.

Room Tip: Ask for one with more light and bring ear plugs since there is a train just behind the Inn.
