Quaint like the photos. They made the best of old fixtures that need updating. It wouldn't keep us from staying again, though. Breakfast area too cramped for comfort but the veranda makes a good alternative. Overall a pleasant stay in a very cool town.

Researched bed and breakfasts in the area for an overnight getaway to celebrate our wedding anniversary. The South Street Inn stood out for its robust website and reservation process, availability for single-night stays (two-night minimums are typical), and its location to the Downtown Mall - a walking promenade of various shops and restaurants two blocks away from the Inn's front door. The Inn itself is a wonderful step back in time, and the staff do well to maintain a house built prior to the start of the Civil War. My wife and I really enjoyed the accommodations - a warm fireplace in our room; the quiet privacy punctuated by the occasional creak of wide floorboards underfoot; and of course the entire house smelling of nutmeg and cinnamon and pumpkin - the result of breads baking in the oven. There's a nicely sized library/game room in the back where nightly wine 'n cheese gatherings occur, followed by a lovely continental breakfast in the morning - the baked breads I mentioned make an appearance here. Overall the South Street Inn is a gem - a great stopover an hour's drive from Richmond to see and experience a bit of Charlottesville, a little cosmopolitan oasis with small town charm, beauty and history.

Room Tip: The room numbering gives the appearance of one massive house, when in fact there is a "cottage...

We stayed here for the night while we were visiting Charlottesville Va. The staff is absolutely wonderful, as soon as we walked in we were greeted with a big smile and some fresh out of the oven ginger cookies and they were amazing. We arrived around and out room was beautiful! We have a fireplace while was so romantic, everything was so clean and romantic! After putting our overnight bag in our room we went to the sitting room where they had a variety of wine, cheese and fruit set out for the guest. It was absolutely lovely. We met some other guest and had such a great time. The location is perfect, you can walk one block to the town square for great restaurants. Morning consisted of delicious coffee, juices, fruits, fresh baked breads and cereals and yogurt. I would definitely stay again!

Diana made it so easy to be gluten free without any previous notice! She just happened to have made a batch of flourless chocolate cookies. After she saw how happy that made me, she made a batch of flourless coconut macaroon cookies the next day and always had a gluten free option (bread or english muffin) in the mornings. All of the employees were wonderful and accommodating. The room was very comfortable and clean! We couldn't have had a better weekend.

It's not often that a b&b/inn, especially one as charming as the south street inn, can accommodate a family with school aged children. We were able to have the most lovely room, connected to a sitting room with a pull out couch for our kids. The staff was incredible- so warm and very helpful. The breakfast was perfect. Our picky eaters loved it but it was great for the adults as well. The wine and cheese hour was a wonderful way to wind down after a busy day of touring and gave us a chance to meet some of the other guests. They were from all over the world and we found ourselves spending much more time than we had anticipated. That said, if you are one that does not enjoy the "communal nature" of a b&b, the south street is also for you as the rooms are wonderful and it is easy to come and go and do what you please without feeling the need to engage in long conversations. The best part...the cookies! Fresh hot delicious and always available. We are having a party for my children in a few months. Our stay at south street was 9 months ago, yet when I asked them about the menu, they asked if we could get the cookies from the south street!

The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. The room was very comfortable and the location ideal. My favorite part of the visit was the wine and cheese hour. The wine selection was very impressive and not the usual grocery store options. The cheeses were also higher end selections. The breakfast and homemade cookies are delightful!
The only disappointment was the very loud train behind the inn that literally shook my room.

The South Street Inn is our favorite place to stay in Charlottesville. The warm and welcoming staff makes sure that your weekend away meets expectations. We've often had the room upgraded -- most recently from a cozy smaller room to a lovely room with whirlpool tub and fireplace. The breakfasts are yummy -- homemade breads and granola. The wine and cheese at night allows for some quiet conversation before heading to the Downtown Mall for dinner. The location is perfect by the way.
