“The location and quality of this Inn are both excellent.”
Reviewed 4 June 2014

We booked this Inn to go and spend a week with our daughter who lives in central Charlottesville.
Upon arrival we were offered a free upgrade from room 4 to room 7. We chose room 7 and and I would say the only downside was that occasionally the sound of the train at night would awaken us. The service and cleanliness of the staff are impeccable. The breakfast was delightful and the early evening wine and cheese was really a nice touch. If you are a light sleeper I would suggest booking one of the rooms in the front of the Inn. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful about where to eat and places to visit and shop. There is no question that the location of this Inn is just simply outstanding. We were two blocks off Market Street and on Saturday, the local farmer's market is directly in front of the Inn. We will definitely stay there again.

Room Tip: Rooms in the front of the Inn are less likely to be affected by the noise of the train.

we had a great experience at 200 South Street. We stayed in the front room, which was beautifully furnished, roomy and very comfortable. Noise, including from the train, was not an issue. The host was extremely helpful with directions and restaurant tips. Breakfast is continental, but the baked goods were delicious and ample. And the cookies in the afternoon were to die for. All in all, I couldn't recommend a B&B any higher.

Room Tip: stay in the front rooms and the train noise won't be an issue

We had an excellent first time in Charlottesville. This was such a beautiful and quant place. It had a historic feel with old style charm as well as very clean amenities. The staff is very friendly. They have breakfast in the mornings with delicious fresh baked breads (banana bread, blueberry bread, etc)., homemade granola and cereals as well as yogurts and fresh fruit. In the early evenings they offer wine and cheese and in the evenings they bake fresh cookies - little touches that go a long way. The location is also excellent - very short walking distance to the downtown "mall" only 2 very small blocks away. (Def have to try the Whiskey Jar for good drinks, beer and farm fresh food). Very close to UVA and Monticello as well. Highly recommend staying here over any of the big hotels when visiting Charlottesville.

Room Tip: We stayed in Suite 20 - its on main road but very quiet. We were right by front door which was very...

This was an overnight stay on our way back North. We decided to stop and do some sightseeing in Charlottesville and Monticello. Upon arrival we were greeted by the delightful aroma of freshly-baked chocolate chip cookies. The staff was friendly, and very helpful. Our room was spacious - we had a suite to accommodate our son, who was traveling with us. This is a historic building, and the furnishings reflect that. We happen to love older furniture, fixtures and decor. We feel that is part of the charm of a Bed and Breakfast. If this is not your thing, you should look elsewhere. The front and back porches were charming and comfortable. We especially enjoyed the Wine and Cheese in the late afternoon. We sat on the upper porch area and were pleased with the atmosphere and the selection of wines and cheeses.
The breakfast was simple, self-serve with fruits, cereal and a wonderful selection of freshly baked breads. They were all wonderful, but a special kudos to the Banana and Raisin breads. Fresh-squeezed Orange Juice was also wonderful.
The pedestrian mall is just a short 2-block walk from 200 South Street. There are many wonderful restaurants to choose from, and many unique stores for shopping. We found everyone in town to be quite friendly and pleasant. Monticello was about a 20-minute drive away. The location was perfect for our needs.
The train did go by in the early morning hours, but was not loud enough to wake anyone - I would compare it to the rumble of a truck running in the street. The train should definitely not be a "deal-breaker" when considering this B&B.
This was a wonderful and memorable stopover for us. We would not hesitate to stay here again and would highly recommend it.

We stayed at 200 South Street this past week, and enjoyed our stay. The place was clean and friendly, continental breakfasts good, nice wine and cheese in late afternoon. Staff were very friendly and helpful in suggesting restaurants, places to visit. Everything worked: plumbing, HVAC, WiFi, etc.
A few quibbles: The furnishings blur the line between "antique" and "rickety." We had a tippy table, a wardrobe with an inoperable door, and a wobbly chair in our room. There is very little common space for hanging out or eating, especially if the weather doesn't favor using the nice wraparound porch. It seems like someone in the past made a decision to turn all available space into guest rooms, rather than leaving a parlor as common space. Breakfast and afternoon food selection were exactly the same assortment all three days we were there. Very good, but boring. This place is larger than most B&Bs -- 20+ rooms, so I guess it has to be run more like a hotel. And then there are the trains, very long freight trains, right behind the backyard fence, day and night but not too frequent.

Room Tip: Go for the front of either building, away from the trains.

My room was clean and stylish. The inn has a great location near the downtown pedestrian mall. They serve a wonderful breakfast. I spoke with a number of other guests at the wine and cheese reception and at breakfast, and the people were all a pleasure. This place is a winner!

Great hospitality at this charming B&B. Loved the fresh-baked goods, ample porch space, and location. Our room (Room 12) was spacious and clean, although lacking in any closet space whatsoever (the linen cabinet did not have a hanging rack). Large flat screen was wall-mounted with premium cable. Good water pressure.
