Owner description: Monticello and its many historical rooms, gadgets, furniture, buildings, and artifacts tell us a lot about Thomas Jefferson, the president who built it and lived there.

The grounds and the view are very nice. The tour includes the first floor of the house and the grounds only. If you want to go upstairs that is another tour and another ticket. No photos inside. The tour guides were knowledgeable, with one exception: One tour guide (outside) demonized Jefferson for being a slaveholder without placing him in the proper sociohistorical context. He also unfairly asserted that Jefferson was the father of all of Sally Hemmings' children. Even though DNA only suggests it might be him, or perhaps his brother; it is inconclusive.

This place was much better planned than say Mt. Vernon. Jefferson knew what he was doing. My fave part were the things he invented like the self opening doors.

We loved our visit to Monticello. Beautiful grounds and home. The tour guides are wonderful. We learned so much about our history. Allow 2 to 4 hours for this visit.

We booked our tour online which saved us a few bucks. We chose the early tour time of 9:15 AM and were glad we did as we parked closeby in a nice shady spot and did not have to wait. Our tour was the basic tour of the first floor (the more costly tour included the second floor). We were there almost three hours and did not take the slavery tour or the garden tour which were both included with our ticket.
It was an informative tour as we learned how brilliant Thomas Jefferson was as he not only wrote the Declaration of Independence, but he was quite the inventor and architect. The tour also addressed slavery and Sarah Hemings. We also got to see the family cemetery which had tombstones dated as late as 2017.
We enjoyed this tour and would definitely recommend it to others.
