The English Inn of Charlottesville
Ranked #9 of 35 Hotels in Charlottesvill...
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 4 November 2007

We have been visting the English Inn since 2004 and it just gets better and better. As world traveler, I have learned to put up with many problems at hotels but the one I will not condone is being treated indifferently by staff. When treated indifferently, I notify management and cross the hotel off my list. There are some five star hotels that were crossed off my list. The English Inn excells at taking care of me and my family. They always do it with a smile and a timely fashion. This care and understanding goes well beyond the meager price for rooms. My last stay was superb and the latest change of a complete non-smoking facility has taken the English Inn to the next level.

If you need tender love and care after long hours of traveling to Charlottesville, the English Inn is your stop!

Many reviews written already, so will just add a few details they didn't cover. Location is very good - restaurants and shopping near by, quick access to freeways, no traffic problems. In fact, it may take less time to get to Monticello from here than from downtown.
Having a suite (separate living room) was considered an outstanding value for the price. While not modern, ambience was considered positive not negative. Construction noise only during day when you are normally out; could hear it in the room but not really bad. Very slight sour small in the hall as if from small natural gas leak - but
this was VERY subtle and not noticed in the room. Breakfast was great, with very large amount of room - never a problem to find a table. Recall that A/C was quiet and effective, not a wall unit (confused about the review claiming the A/C was loud).

Just returned from 2-night stay. Construction on the conference center was in progress--roofing--but could not hear it in the room. Large clean room with sofa, frig, and micro. Bathroom was larger than we have found other places lately. Breakfast was better than we expected and varied morning to morning--sausage versus bacon, pancakes versus French toast. Hall carpeting looked new and clean. Pool was warm and well cared for. Exercise area has a stationary bike and treadmill--could use some free weights or TotalGym for upper body workout. Hotel easy to find and convenient to all we visited. English theme is limited to Tudor exterior and some oak antiques so don't expect B&B atmosphere, but warmer atmosphere than lots of hotels. There were a lot hotels in the area, so if you want modern and newer, try others. But if you want quiet, clean, and roomy, we recommend it.

In September the Virginia Association of Speech, Debate, and Drama Coaches held its annual conference at the English Inn of Charlottesville for the third consecutive year. We love the Inn!! The Virginia hospitality is unsurpassed! The staff is friendly and accommodating. The rooms are clean, huge, comfortable and reasonably priced. A full hot buffet breakfast is available daily as part of the hospitality. We love their quaint custom of providing homemade chocolate chip cookies and coffee in the late afternoon. Once again the English Inn provided the perfect backdrop for another successful conference. In fact, our members look forward to returning there again in 2008 for our next meeting!! There are simply not enough superlatives to describe this well-kept secret in the heart of Virginia!!!!

This is just an OK hotel - comparable to any big chain with a free breakfast. The only difference is the English airs it puts on and the classical background music . The room we had was functional with the usual amenities. Breakfast was the usual selection in a slightly better than average breakfast area. They committed the cardinal sin of running out of coffee during breakfast and took much to long to replenish after being alerted.

Just got back from the English Inn after booking a room that I shared with my girlfriend. We had tickets to a show at the John Paul Jones arena and live three hours away. We decided to stay in town and close to the arena. Construction is going on in one of the buildings but check in was a breeze, the staff booked a cab for us (not exactly within walking distance of arena), and our stay was really great. We had two firm beds, a window that opens (love that), refrigerator, microwave, nice bathroom, good water pressure, wonderful pool for laps, and great coffee. We didn't go to the brunch which is included but the reviews say it is very good. There is also a great bagel shop next door. This is a great find for the money. The room, although a bit basic, was very clean. The lobby was really pretty too. I travel alot and I was impressed with the english Inn. This is not the Beverly Hills Hotel but a great value--beats most low end chains and has somethings that the bigger chains lack (big pool, open windows, microwaves, clean rooms, nice beds..and charming staff). I will be back!!!!!!!

My daughter stayed one night at the english inn at charlottesville when she had an appt at UVA. This hotel was very nice and clean!!!!!!They also had a wonderful HOT breakfast free to all guests. I would diffently stay again and would highly recommend (already have) to everyone. The staff was also very friendly and helpful with directions and even called after we had checked in to make sure the room was okay which it was.
