“Southern Charm at University of Virginia”
Reviewed 12 June 2014

The property is a renovated Best Western across the sports fields of the University of Virginia. It is a converted motor lodge where the exterior walkways have been enclosed in glass panels so that they are under air - nice touch. Lobby is nicely appointed and has an easily accessible elevator.

Rooms are clean with nice, comfortable beds with 4 pillows each (yea!). Each room has its own central air, which is quiet compared to the window mount models. Good bathroom with non-slip surface in bathtub/shower.

Each stay includes a free hot breakfast on the first floor.

Room Tip: One possible knock on this property: Cable-satellite reception was terrible - almost not worth watch...

This is a renovated old hotel across the street from UVA. Location and parking are great. Rooms are old motel style, somewhat musty. AC is old, cycles a lot. Moderately clean. Beds have plastic mattress cover which crinkles. Can get good price on others websites. Stay there if you understand what you are getting-convenience, price, modest accommodations.

I just want to say that I had a really great time staying at the Cavalier over the Memorial Day weekend. I was there to attend a wedding and I was very impressed with the cleanliness of the rooms and the employees were fantastic. I was also impressed with the hot breakfast that was available. I know when I come back to this area I will definitly be staying at the Cavalier.

Thank you for a wonderful weekend! The check-in process was so efficient and easy for us, and our room was clean and had a wonderful view of the UVA campus. We really appreciate this!!! Each morning, we were able to stop by the cafe early for coffee, and the continental breakfast selection of items and the staff were wonderful. The custodial staff was also so friendly and helpful to us. Our experience at the Cavalier Inn was so relaxing and enjoyable . . . most people don’t believe me when I tell them that knowing that over 30,000 people were projected to be on the UVA grounds for the 2014 Graduation Weekend . . . but I tell them that we stayed at the Cavalier Inn, and everything was perfect! The staff, the accomodations, and the location cannot be beat!!! Thank you for making our daughter's college graduation such a positive, relaxing and enjoyable experience for us.

Chose hotel due to Best Western name, location & rate. Can understand why Best Western is no longer carrying this site. Offered a rate of $84 only to be charged $105/nite at checkout. Hotel is run down and in need of demolition. Beyond rehab. Great opportunity for redevelopment due to location but with limited land. Room was generally clean but checked for bugs thoroughly and found everything very outdated and worn out. Exposed metal brace at foot of bed had been covered with duct tape but still played hell with the ankles as you walked past.

Room Tip: Request a room not facing Rt 29. Glass wall muffles street noise but cooks the hallway.

This hotel offered good rate for a family wedding. I asked about this hotel and was told it was the hotel for UVA parents in town. When I arrived I saw 2 cousins at the check-in desk, I thought checking in. One was there trying to get a suitable room for the third time(1st one already had someone in it, 2nd room had drawers full of insects), the other was trying to get a different room because their bathroom ceiling was dripping water. My room was small, dated, but otherwise okay. At 10:30 PM my daughter called to ask for a blanket since the air was comfortable for one bed, but blowing on the other bed. She was told they would check for one and call her back. We received no call, and at 4:30AM she went downstairs and came back with a blanket. At checkout I was given a bill with a nightly charge of $1.50 plus .08 for taxes for a safe charge. Wen I asked about it I was told it was for using the in-room safe, but if I did not use it let them know and they would take it off. I did not use it and they took it off. Come on, If you need the extra $1.50, just add it to the price of the room, don't try to sneak it in on a dubious charge. Thomas Jefferson must be proud. Dated hotel, only kept up marginally, poor service, equals last time I stay here.

Room Tip: go to another hotel.

Hello

Thank you for taking the time to write a review, I apologize that we failed to meet with your expectations, the concerns you listed were addressed with the staff and the appropriate action was taken, as far as the safe charge, it is part of the check in process, as it was explained to you and on your registration card you initialed the charge and it is clearly posted on all recipients, and as you stated the staff did tell you about the charge and if you do not use it just let us know we are happy to remove it, so there was no attempt to "sneak it in on a dubious charge" . we wish you will in your future travels.

Very convenient to UVA. Breakfast average but good variety. Older hotel. Found bugs in room.
Bathroom vanity slanted downward...afraid it would fall off wall. Hotel staff not very responsive. Don't stay on the side facing the road. Glassed in corrider feels like sauna.

Hello Mooresville NC,

Thank you for your review, we appreciate all of the comments and suggestions that we receive from guests that have stayed with us, I do apologize for the warm hallways, but it is unfortunate that people like to do things that they would not do at home such and sit on a vanity top, we are in the process of installing additional support for them, we are very aware of how it looks, but staying so busy it is a challenge to get into the rooms to do maintenance when people want to check in earlier than our posted check in time. Over the next couple of months all of our rooms will have new furniture and I invite you back to see the difference with a more modern look to our rooms and yes the vanity tops are part of that process. Again thank you so much for taking time out to let us know about your stay.
