Start with the Rotunda, I played my guitar in the basement. I was married in garden 9. Heck my daughter walked "the lawn." Please don't visit, it is getting too crowded. But if you come, spend huge amounts of money with local business, taste the local wine, local beer, eat local apples, choose any of the wonderful restaurants, --then go away, DO NOT tell one of those nasty magazines that advertise best places to live, we like it just the way it is, thank you.

Start at the Rotunda and walk south among the inward buildings called The Lawn where students and professors have lived since the time of Thomas Jefferson. Don't forget to visit the gardens behind the Lawns, look for stone artifacts from a very old church in England, and a stop at the room occupied by Edgar Allen Poe is a must. The stone chapel west of the Rotunda has one of the largest pipe organs of any church in Virginia....still used for services and special occasions. A visit to the McCormick Observatory---one of the first in the USA should be a priority for any science fans. Of course, don't miss shopping or eating on The Corner just a few blocks from the Rotunda..great place for people watching too.

We were there as tourists, NOT to check out the university for a student. We took a tour given by a student and it was fantastic. The student can take you up to the rotunda, explains the history of the building and of "the lawn" with the professor's homes and senior student rooms. It is a beautiful campus.

The campus has a southern-hospitality-comfortable feel. The historic brick buildings, tree lined pathways and open gardens convey a charm of elegance. Steeped in history, educational excellence and community outreach, UVA offers students ample opportunities for growth in a beautiful environment. We were visiting from California at a great time -- the trees were in their fall glory of red, dark orange and golden yellow. UVA was the last stop on a multi-state "perspective college" visit trip. The university fits well with the community. Besides we loved the tradition of leaving notes at the base of Jefferson's statue in the rotunda -- secrets the NSA can not read.

I really didn't know what to expect when I arrived at The University of Virginia but I was pleasantly surprised walking around and enjoying the buildings, the grounds and the beauty of the campus. It was interesting to hear the history of Thomas Jefferson overseeing the building of the school from his home. I was not aware that Edgar Allan Poe went to school there and his dorm room has been preserved to be seen. We started our visit at the Rotunda and then worked out way around the lawn and gardens. Very enjoyable and a great day!
