Much smaller than Monticello, but more personal that either Monticello or Montpelier, this completes the 3-president triangle in this area of Virginia. If you enjoy history, you should definitely include this on your tours.

“Another Walk Through History”
Reviewed 11 November 2013

This historic site, along with Monticello and Montpelier, is a must see when in the Charlottesville area. I learned more about James Monroe during the tour than I had ever learned reading.

“Excellent”
Reviewed 5 November 2013

It was well worth the modest entrance fee to visit Ash-Lawn House. The house tour was excellent and the grounds lovely. I liked the simplicity of the house and you could really feel the history of the property and the events that took place there.
It is starkly in contrast to Monticello but all the better for that. Put it on your itinerary.

“Stop here before Monticello!”
Reviewed 4 November 2013

Four years ago I stopped by Ash Lawn-Highland after visiting Monticello. I was a bit taken back by the admission price considering how small it was in light of what I had just paid to see the grand Monticello. Well on this trip we did Ash Lawn-Highland first and it worked out much better. It probably is a bit expensive for what you see but it was a nice destination. Our guide could probably use a bit more volume to emphasize some important facts (if I start hearing too many dates too quickly I start to lose interest or get confused).

“Get to Know Monroe”
Reviewed 30 October 2013

This was a planned stop for us on our trip to Virginia, and we're glad we took the time. As others have said, it is not as grand as Monticello, but the tour is very interesting and informative. We don't always think about how most of these gentlemen were contemporaries; touring these landmarks helps us to realize how each of them influenced one another and how that impacted our country. Well worth your time.
