Ash Lawn - Highland is right down the road from Jefferson's Monticello, the home of James Monroe, and one of three presidential homes in the central VA area. My fiance and I visit Highland, Monticello, and Madison's Montpelier in the same weekend. Of the three Highland is easily the least grand and opulant. The grounds are considerably smaller than either Monticellow or Montpelier. However, that does not mean Highland does not have its charms.
As you make the right onto the drive upto the property it is lined beautifully with what I believe are Hanging Dogwood. Though, the trees were not in full bloom during our visit they were still spectacular. I would expect them to be more so during that late spring and summer months. The house is much smaller than one might expect to find on the property of a president and prominent land owner but there is a lot of history to be found throughout the home.
The tour guides are wonderful, extremely knowlegable, and very pleasant. There is much to learn about James Monroe, his family, and his home/property. Certainly worth a visit if you are already in the area to visit Monticello.
