“Wished for more outside seating”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 June 2013

The food was good, the service was fine, and the food arrived in a timely manner but...inside was a little low on atmosphere with a TV on and not much excitement on a Sunday night. The TV is a Mexican tradition but not one I admire. Go for the good food; you won't be disappointed. Probably one of the least expensive options in the wonderful pedestrian mall.

“Reliably mouth-watering Mexican food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 May 2013

The best Mexican restaurant in Charlottesville is El Puerto. The service is reliably excellent and fast, the food is tasty, well seasoned, large proportioned and always hot off the grill, and the choices are extensive. The location across from Barracks Rd Shopping Center (behind the bright yellow printing place) is tricky to find, and it can be crowded during the "traditional" lunch & dinner hours, but it is worth the visit. They recently added a location on the Downtown mall, and that will probably fill up too. We recommend visiting during off hours, as that is what we usually do in CVille since everything good seems to fill up, especially when the college is in session. Seasoning is authentic and the cooks there are too. Try the carnitas - they are the best dish they serve, I think, and the flan is delicious.

“Crowded on Saturday night.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 April 2013

After the sports events in town, El Puerto filled quickly with large family and student groups. The service kept up well with the sudden influx of customers. Our waiter was helpful with our questions and his suggestions. The staff appears to be all Latino. And the food reflects this with authentic flavors and abundant size servings. I loved the guacamole, which was nicely seasoned to enhance the avocado flavor. I had the best mole sauce I've had in a long time. All 6 of us were very pleased with our orders, especially those that had the shrimp chimis.

“Could be better...”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 December 2012

Finding this restaurant was a chore...located at a busy intersection and in the back corner of the shopping center...no roadside signage and can't be seen from any direction...once inside the service was very good...the food...average...I've had better and worse...not sure why all the hype for this place...perhaps people haven't had Mexican food...in Mexico...

“Better than average for CHO”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 November 2012

Sauteed chicken with onions was flavorful and without cloying cheese. Many of the patrons appeared to be Latin Americans and appreciated the authenticity. They are moving to the downtown mall and should be a welcome addition.
