We had not dined in the mall in a good while, and the restaurant we did last had closed, after reading a few menus, (and judging from the amount of folks eating) we decided to try Zo.ca.lo

We are both glad we did!! outdoor seating was good, nice cool summer evening,
service was excellent, and the food was Divine..
good beer list, good wine list, and nice tasty selections on the menu,

we will definitely be back!

We love this place. Several years ago on our first visit to the restaurant, we dined next to a sockless John Grisham, who tastefully pulled the sever aside to take care of the bill for the guests at his table. At the time, the restaurant was new and I thought to myself - "I hope this lasts." Well, it seems to have really lasted and improved with time. The place is stylish and modern, and the food is wonderful. I started with a shrimp-spiked yellow tomato gazpacho, and had a steak for my entree - both were sublime. Amazingly, there is a kid's menu (our four-year-old daughter was with us, and they told us about it). The chicken fingers and french fries were perfect. We'll keep coming here, and you should definitely give it a try.

The sleek, modern, decor is reminiscent of a cool lounge perhaps more so than a restaurant, which gives it a somewhat decadent, exclusivity. Service was professional and prompt, though I tend to enjoy eating at the large open concrete bar.

Zo.ca.lo offers an interesting drink menu of craft cocktails, and those that I have sampled have been quite good. The food is innovative and interesting, featuring an eclectic fusion of southwestern, sonoran, continental, and nouvelle. In any case, all items I have sample have been beautifully prepared and exquisitely tasty. The mussels in chili broth, pork tenderloin, and key lime chicken were amazing, as were the vella jack cheese fritters and polenta fries.

Great experience, great food.

Charottesville's 'Pedestrian Mall' is fun, interesting, and a great people watching area. However only a few restaurants actually live up to the experience. Zocalo does. It's food and drinks are very good, and it's prices are moderate. It certainly can be very noisy, whether inside or out. The duck is terrific, and the mojitos are quite easy to drink.

We happened upon this place on the Mall in Charlottesville, and when the outside was steamy and threatening rain, we were happy to find an air-conditioned interior. The service was wonderful, and the food was superb -- we had arugula salad with beets, tuna tartare (my partner said it tasted like a tuna gazpacho with veggies mixed in -- unusual and nice), duck (not quite up to the duck at Peking Gourmet in Falls Church the night before, but good, with a tasty sauce), and chili-dusted sea scallops that were sensation with little rounds of roasted plantain and a piquant sauce. We'll go back to this one for sure, though it was a bit noisy for my taste. (It's that modern style, with hard surfaces everywhere and lots of guests who are young folks who never learned about the 'indoor voice.')
