they had a great drink and entree selection. prices were reasonable although the cocktails were as pricey as the entrees. the service was slow but it was a perfect night for outdoor dining and the entire mall was crowded. will definitely return.

“Red Pump”

A new restaurant in the Downtown Mall that took the spot where Positively 4th Street was. Very nice Tuscan dishes and a good bottle of Sangiovese to go with our dishes. Definitely worth a try.

“Delicious food, beautiful decor...”

... and likely to be a "beaurtiful people" restaurant. We had a good experience at Red Pump last Tuesday night as walk-ins. The food was very good, though portions are small. We live in a small town known for wonderful restaurants, and I found Red Pump to be on par with our offerings.

“OK, not impressed”
Reviewed 14 August 2014

Four of us dined outside. A beautiful evening but wish we had made another choice of restaurant. First, the outside tables are too small to accomodate your food - not well planned. Our watiress, though pleasant, was not well trained.

Our first indication of 'not really ready to open yet' was the fact that they had no iced tea! Imagine, a restaurant in the South and no tea! They said they were "working to make it available". What more does it take than a big pot, water, and some good tea?

We shared 2 appitizers the Bruschetta and Beef Carpaccio. Presentation was appealing, taste OK, not spectacular and portions were a little small for the price.

One of our party ordered the Tuscan Steak. There are 2 or 3 other restaurants in Charlottesville that can provide a better steak with either larger portions or for less money. The other 3 of us had the Margherita and Merquez pizzettes. Size was good for two people and they looked appealing. Crust was good and crunchy due to the stone oven they use to cook it. 4 draft beers completed our offerings. We really did not have that much to eat and it was till over $100. We are happy to pay the price if the food/atmosphere wows us - this did not.

Do have to admit they did a beautiful job with the renovation of the building itself but our feeling is they thought presentation of building and serviceware is what would sell and did not put much thought into the actual menu, price and offerings.

As you can see from the reviews there are some who enjoyed. We were disappointed.

Brian-
Thank you for joining us during our first weeks of opening! We have had a wonderful reception and are very happy to be a part of Charlottesville's Historic Downtown Mall. Unfortunately, the allowed size of our patio caused some restrictions on the furniture as well. Also, I am happy to assure you that we now serve ice tea, and I am in full agreement that nothing is more refreshing than a tall glass of ice tea on a patio in the summer evening. I encourage you to join us again and try our fall menu, which we have just presented. When you do, we would love to hear your feedback personally.

“Not Impressed”
Reviewed 4 August 2014 via mobile

We've definitely experienced better, though having been in Italy just last month, I admit we're spoiled. At any rate, three of us waited nearly 45 minutes for appetizers, which were a charcuterie plate and cold spring pea puree. Both were good, but I'm not sure what the wait was for. We did enjoy a fairly expensive bottle of wine in the interim, with periodic reassurances from our server that our entrees would soon appear. They did, but not very soon. The tortellini with duck confit was relatively tasty but was also only about five bites. The other two entrees - tagliatelle with bay scallops and fussili with rock shrimp were more substantial, but pretty much tasteless. Even a little salt or pepper would have helped a great deal. Most of those two entrees remained uneaten when they were cleared from our table, but nobody questioned why that was.

As we waited for dessert, a manager came around and apologized for the delay and offered us a complimentary glass of wine, which was a nice gesture. He then proceeded, however, to pour whatever the house red wine was into THE SAME glasses that contained our previous wine. Who does that? And the house wine wasn't especially drinkable to begin with.

The dessert finally arrived - a poppy seed ricotta cake - and it was completely dry. The whipped cream served next to it tasted more like chalk than cream, though the olive oil gelato next to that wasn't bad at all. The dessert remained 70% uneaten as well.

The ambiance is nice - the high-top tables near the windows are a plus, but the high-top chairs are very uncomfortable.

Bottom line: this place has been open only about a week and so slow service is understandable and completely forgivable. Tiny portions, tasteless food, and mixing wines are less forgivable. We're hoping they're able to work this out.
