“Delightful stay in the country - surrounded by birds”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 May 2014

Many great things to say about this well maintained inn.
* location - in a very quiet suburban development about 15 min from downtown. There is very little traffic at night or early morning - the dominant sound in the background is birdsong.
* original building is surrounded by large shade trees. When we first arrived the owners gave us complimentary drinks and homemade brownies. We enjoyed this snack while sitting on the brick patio in the shade.
* we stayed in the harrison room - in a cottage next door to the original building. The place was clean and everything worked as expected.
* breakfast was served in an airy sunporch in the original building. The owners adapted the menu to our special food requests. There was plenty to eat and drink
* the owners - Terry and Jim really make the place special. They were wonderful during every interaction from the initial booking to every aspect of our stay.

We'll be back.

I can't tell you how much we appreciate the time our guests take to share experiences at Silver Thatch. It means so much to us, and we thank you. Your review made me smile, as I hear birdsong each morning on my way to the Inn. What a lovely way to start our day! An extra special bonus is learning how many species of bird life surrounds us. Incredible! And we thank you for that as well.

Thank you for including Silver Thatch in your visit to Charlottesville, and we look forward to your next visit!

Terri and Jim are so helpful and give you great suggestions while you are here. The B&B is lovely and historic without being stuffy. The rooms are really comfortable and the setting, while outside of C'ville a bit, it is so peaceful and quiet. you will get a great night's sleep! The breakfasts are really tasty and very filling. We stayed in the James Monroe room and it was very pretty and the bed very comfortable.

There is a little pub on the premises but it is not open after 6 pm when they go home for the evening. This was our only disappointment but we found out that they had closed down the restaurant awhile ago and so they can not have the pub open without serving food - state law.

Room Tip: I doubt there's a bad room here mainly because the area is so quiet and it is away from any traf...

Thanks so much for taking the time to share your comments, which are very much appreciated! We're glad you enjoyed your stay, and while it's true we no longer serve dinner or our delicious Pub food (which I miss terribly!), we do offer wines, including champagnes, ports, sherries, and we offer a good selection of locally brewed and favorite beers. While I do close most times around 6-ish, if guests are enjoying a chat and beverages in the Pub I'm happy to stay until 7 or so. Wine or beer may also be ordered to be placed in the guest's room to enjoy when they return from dinner or from a day out, properly relaxed. It is a pretty neat little English Pub!

...we stayed in the largest room, The Jefferson. Room was clean, bed comfortable, a log provided first night in the fireplace and had two comfortable chairs facing it. Bottled water, cookies and peanuts were complimentary in our room. Nice soaps in the bathroom. Excellent breakfast provided with a gourmet touch. Hosts were very friendly and worked hard to make our stay comfortable. Wine bar on the premises and available when hosts are on the premises....usually until about 6pm. Only downside was availability of hot water in the shower, maybe too many guests were using it at the same time. I would have rated it a five otherwise. About 15 minutes to downtown and 20 minutes to Monticello and other attractions.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write a review for us! I sincerely apologize for the shortage of hot water during your stay. But the problem has been resolved. In early April the back yard of the Inn was a river, and we thought it was due to snow melt. Unfortunately, it turned out it was due to a major leak in a 50 gallon holding tank in the basement, which flooded the basement as well. Hopefully our guests are now enjoying hot showers! Again, thank you for your kind words!

My wife and I stayed at the Silver Thatch Inn while in Charlottesville, in order to see President Jefferson's home. The inn was quaint, and the hosts were down to earth and willing to do anything possible to make our stay as good as possible. The inn is easy to locate and in a convenient setting. The breakfasts were delicious. I cannot imagine a better place to stay.

This is our 2nd stay at Silver Thatch Inn. Terry & Jim are wonderful hosts. The breakfasts are truly outstanding! ( as well as Terry's delicious chocolate cookies & brownies...) Everything was perfect. We will return! Thanks for sharing your historic inn with us.

Thank you! And by popular demand the brownies will be making frequent appearances alongside the cookies! In the summertime, both may be joined by my fresh strawberry or seasonal fruit ice creams or sorbets as well!

This inn is conveniently located just north of Charlottesville. It's perfectly situated...not far but just beyond the hustle and bustle. It's minutes to downtown and wineries alike. The rooms are comfortably appointed. Terri and Jim are charming hosts who've thought of everything for their gusts comforts. A welcoming glass of wine in iggy's Pub, a delicious fruit and cheese platter (yummy figs!), amazing breakfasts (fresh brewing coffee is the best morning alarm clock!), thick fluffy towels, comfy robes, luxurious bedding....and great suggestions for dining out and winery tour services. We plan to return when in the Charlottesville area. Thanks to Silver Thatch Inn for enbeing an integral parrot our memorable 27th anniversary weekend getaway!!

Room Tip: The Jefferson is a beautiful room w sitting area in front of a fireplace. The gorgeous 4 poster king...

My husband and I chose to spend a night at Silver Thatch Inn in celebration of our 25 year anniversary. After a day of visiting wineries, we arrived at the Inn and were greeted by both Jim and Terri. We were shown to our room, the John Tyler, which is beautifully decorated and very cozy, and then we returned to the main building to enjoy a complimentary drink in the pub. After dinner at a nearby restaurant, we returned to our room for the night and hunkered down by the wood burning fireplace, awaiting an approaching snow storm. The next morning we enjoyed a wonderful, delicious breakfast consisting of a baked apple, bacon and buckwheat pancakes which were light as a feather. Unfortunately, we had hurry out right after eating to head home before the roads became too treacherous. All said, we had a lovely time and only wish we could have stayed longer.
