“Snug Harbor Getaway”

A little slice of paradise describes the locales Caribbean island feel with the water, sand, tiki bar and calypso tunes. The cottages are clean and quaint though somewhat rustic, and you can bring your pet. We enjoyed our first time kayaking on an eco-tour in the Assateague Channel with views of flora and fauna, including the famous ponies. Also, a great view of the lighthouse.

This is a family-owned business and the owners are friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable about all things Chincoteague. Basha loves to answer all your questions. We enjoyed our relaxing June getaway so much that we are returning in October with three other couples.

We would have given 5 stars, but the bed in our cottage was too small for two adults who are used to a western king at home. A queen size bed would have been great; however, we understand that some of the other cottages have larger beds.

Highly recommend Snug Harbor for a quiet vacation getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Four women who volunteer at a farm for "RETIRED EQUINES" in CT decide to do a road trip to find the "Wild Ponies of Chincoteague". Snug Harbor popped up on TripAdvisor and caught my eye right away. The location, description of accommodations AND reviews from customers told me "this is the place'! Good call because we couldn't have asked for a better experience. It is very laid back, the accommodations are clean, cozy and comfortable. We rented kayaks from Snug Harbor and saw ponies!! Better than National Geographic!! It was an amazing experience and John and Basia make sure you are a happy camper when you leave!! They obviously love what they do and enjoy sharing their world with the people that come to stay at Snug Harbor. This place is a gem and can't wait to return.

“A Pleasurable Experience”

Snug Harbor Marina at Chincoteague is a comfortable, convenient destination for the vacationer who is looking for an introduction to the wonders and beauty of Chincoteague and Assateague islands, on the Virginia eastern shore. We stayed in the large cottage (sleeps four) at the end of the row of cottages, nearest the water. There was a cool breeze blowing practically all the time, allowing us to dispense with air conditioning. And no mosquitoes, as opposed to the situation on Assateague Island, where we were savagely attacked in the forest by those critters. However, there are no mosquitoes on the Assateague beach. We saw the ponies on our first day, cruising in our host's pontoon boat. John Shields and his spouse, Basia, are pleasant, accommodating owners of Snug Harbor, always ready to help. Pets are allowed at Snug Harbor, but not on Assateague beach. They are allowed on the beach at Assateague National Park, in Maryland, some 45 mins to one hour drive from Snug Harbor.

The owners were fantastic people who love their island and what it offers...
Can't wait to stay there again!

The accommodations are not your most luxury! The cabins are older, clean, comfortable, very cozy. We had everything we needed. this is great for a quiet off season get away or for a young family who like water activities, parks hiking and of course the beautiful Ponies.

Sun rise is spectacular! Wide variety of birds, beautiful beaches, def bring binoculars and a telescope as the ponies can be seen from this harbor. We will def be going back!

“Great views, friendly people, cottages are basic and could use a little updating.”

Rented a one-bedroom cottage for three nights for our annual "sisters" get-away weekend with myself and my adult sisters. We were not looking for luxury but wanted a good location and basic, clean amenities that included a kitchen so we could cook in. Overall we're pretty happy with what we received.

The pros:
Beautiful views and great location--easy enough to bike to the refuge/beach and town but a little off the main drag so you don't have to deal with so much traffic. Plus the views of the Assateague Light and sunsets were absolutely gorgeous. We even saw wild ponies in the distance and dolphins close-by.

Nice owners/operators--very friendly, accomodating and great hosts. Always make you feel like they have time for you.

On-site kayak, boat rentals, tours and tiki bar plus docks for fishing/crabbing were very nice.

Clean cottages--everything was clean if very basic and a bit dated.

Cons/Improvements that might be useful:

Obviously the cottages are basic and in need of a little renovation. But the price is worth the stay.

I'd recommend adding a microwave to all cottages and putting the television int he living quarters in a better spot (it was on top of the fridge).

More lighting was needed in our cottage. There was no overhead light or significant lamp in the "sofa" area of the main room. This made it difficult to "hang out" in that area past dark. I'd recommend adding a light here.

Adding a ceiling fan to the bedroom would help cool this area better.

Cooking/serving/eating implements could be a little improved: our eating utensils were pretty dated. some of the forks were falling apart. Also the cottage lacked a serving bowl and a pitcher (for making iced tea, etc.) and didn't have a single baking pan. Adding these three things would have helped out significantly

Also, ladies, make sure you bring your hair dryer if this is a concern for you. There is no complimentary in cottage dryer. :)

Overall, we'd stay here again and just know a little more what to expect. Nice, basic and clean accommodations. Just think some updates/improvements might go a long way toward improving customer experience.
