“Refuge inn, Chincoteague”
Reviewed 2 June 2014 via mobile

We got there at noon on a Sunday and although check-in time is 3 pm, the friendly staff had no trouble finding us a room. Relaxed in the hot tub that evening. The lot behind our room had tall trees with birds and made us feel like we were living in a cabin in wilderness. Nice, tidy room with a king sized bed. The ac/fan wasn't too loud and we slept really well. Monday morning breakfast wasn't out of this world, just the standard fare to get you going. Just minutes away from the wild life refuge and also conveniently located close to good restaurants. We would highly recommend this hotel when visiting the island.

Extremely clean, affordable, quaint, and relaxing. Those are all words that describe the Refuge Inn. On top of that, the staff is extremely gracious. We went over Memorial Day weekend and couldn't have asked for better accommodations for a short family vacation. Kids -- and adults -- love the indoor swimming pool. The breakfast, one hot item accompanied by cereals, toast, yogurt, fruit, etc., is a good way to start the day. Also, it's one of the closest hotels to the beach. We rented bikes at the shop next door one morning and had a great time exploring Assateague, which is bike friendly -- a plus. No complaints at all. Chincoteague and the Refuge are wonderful destinations. And be sure to make reservations at Bill's. Been there several times, and never had a bad experience.

Room Tip: Try getting a room on the second floor facing the courtyard, not the parking lot.

Great room, great staff. Loved the breakfast and the breakfast room. They cooked the day's warm breakfast item in the kitchen and brought it to your table. Nearest hotel to Assateague Island. The room was charming. Will go to this hotel again if I visit Assateague Island in the future.

Booked the Refuge Inn based on the comments, and was not disappointed. Spent a weekend in early May at the Inn. The location was great for us as we wanted to be close to Assateague Island, and that they are. The check-in was smooth and the people who work there are really friendly. There is a continental breakfast in the morning, I believe begins at 7 a.m., and they had made waffles one day and French toast the next to order. There is coffee and tea throughout the day. There is limited seating in the dining area, but they do have a couple of picnic tables in the yard amongst the pine trees were you can enjoy breakfast also.

The hotel is located a short drive away from the shops in the little town, but there are a couple of restaurants nearby you can walk to. They keep menus of all the restaurants in a basket in the lobby area, which I thought was a nice touch. You can decide before heading out where you want to go.

Although we chose to drive over to Assateague and around the island, they do have a bike rental place right across the parking lot. The resident ponies do provide some entertainment, especially when you get a bag of their treats at the front desk and feed them.

We would definitely stay here again.

This was our third time staying at the Refuge Inn and we will be coming back in the future. The rooms are comfortable and quiet. The staff is kind and courteous and always make us feel welcome. The location to Assateague can't be beat!

Our family had a wonderful stay at the hotel. It's very close to the National Park which is very nice!! You can even rent bikes to go the Park. My kids enjoyed feeding and petting the ponies they have at the hotel. The hotel was very clean and neat. Housekeeping did a nice job keeping our room clean also. The beds are on the hard side so I was stiff in the AM but I usually encounter this problem at most hotels. I always bring my own pillow due to back and neck issues. The room also has a mini fridge which is very nice!! The front staff was very friendly and helpful. The hotel offers breakfast in the morning but the options are limited and the seating is limited, it was crazy in the morning. We ended up going to McDonalds twice (which was next door) for breakfast. I would probably bring my own breakfast if I stayed here again. The hotel has a lovely pool, hot tub, and sauna area. My kids loved the pool. It was clean too. The only issue was that towels ran out quickly so you ended up using your room towels or shared them. I would probably bring our towels in the future. I would stay up on the second floor to avoid the pool noise on the first floor. The hotel was peaceful and quiet. Our family would stay here again!!

Room Tip: Second floor offers the quieter rooms since you are away from the pool area!!

We are very glad to hear that you had a wonderful stay here at the Refuge, and that you enjoyed your time on Chincoteague! I did want to let you know that we have one room with a king-size TempurPedic mattress, which you are welcome to request for future visits. Many guests with back issues enjoy that room tremendously--several have even purchased the same mattress after sleeping on it here!

As far as breakfast is concerned, we apologize for the craziness during your visit. We are very limited in our kitchen & dining facilities (and are out of room to build!) so we do the best we can with what we have. There are trays available to take food back to your room or out to the picnic tables, but McDonalds and the Chincoteague Diner across the street are both tasty and tempting! We always welcome suggestions for how to improve our offerings and would be interested in any ideas you may have-- you can send them to us at marketing@refugeinn.com

Thank you for taking the time to review our property. We hope to see you back again soon!

My husband, daughter, and I, along with my in-laws stayed at the Refuge Inn from May 15-18th. We had a very nice stay, while there was a large group of high school kids staying at the hotel, the room hotel remained mostly quiet. We stayed in room 300, one of the two suites. The room was well maintained, clean, and comfortable. The pool was heated and very clean, my three year old loved it. The grounds were nice and clean. The continental breakfast was average, but on Saturday they made Belgian waffles to order, which was really nice. The staff was very nice and helpful. They actually let us borrow an umbrella during a heavy rain storm. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay, and we will definitely choose the Refuge Inn for our stay in Chincoteague in the future.

We are so glad you enjoyed your time in Chincoteague! We love the waffles too, but I think our favorite is french toast (usually served on Sunday mornings.) All of us here at the Refuge hope you'll visit again soon.
