“Wow!”

Feels like coming home after a long ride. Hot waffles in the morning and a bicycle at my door. Answers to all of my questions served with a smile. The ponies are friendly and the pool is warm. Great stay!!!

My husband and I stayed at Refuge Inn for two nights. It is a very well-maintained property with spacious rooms, nicely appointed, and clean facilities. The staff is helpful and friendly. The Inn is close to Assateague and it was nice to be able to ride our bikes there and back. The breakfast is really a step up from what they call "continental," as they have eggs, oatmeal and sometimes waffles. The ponies outside are a nice touch.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review! I've shared your compliments about the breakfast with our breakfast ladies-- they take great pride in their food and service, and will appreciate hearing that you consider us a step above continental.

This was my first trip to Chincoteague & the Refuge Inn. It surely won't be my last. We arrived very early (check in is at 4pm), however were very surprised that our room was ready. We stayed in Room 223. Very comfortable & cozy room!!! Decor was new, and was extremely clean. Our room was pretty basic, 2 beds, small sitting area, tv, mini fridge, coffee maker & hairdryer. Bathroom on the smaller size, but clean & well kept. Plenty of towels too :) I'm not sure if all the rooms are this way, but the bathtub in this room is tall/ and deep. Not a problem for me or my husband, but I really liked it. However, could possibly be an issue for some. Our room was right near the pool & hot tub. Good pool hours (8am-10pm). Balcony of our room looked out to the parking lot and pony pen. Was fun to sit and watch the ponies in the morning. We enjoyed the breakfast that is included. It's not a buffet, but has plenty of choices. (French Toast on Sunday was terrific!). Overall we enjoyed our stay to the island, and to this property. We are already planning another mini trip to come visit. Can't wait!

Thanks for the great review! We have some rooms with deep soaking tubs, some rooms with normal tub/showers, and one room with a handicap-accessible walk-in shower. That one has a very low entrance for someone unable to step into a tub-- it's room 135, if anyone reading this needs that special shower!

We are glad you enjoyed your visit and hope you return again soon.

This is a great hotel and its name is completely appropriate. The Refuge Inn is the most secluded of the hotels we saw while biking around Chincoteague - away from the road, with a lovely outdoor pool in the back surrounded by pine trees. The room we stayed in (one of the suites) had a lovely balcony, spacous living room and kitchenette. We would definitely stay here again. Not to mention, having the Chincoteague Museum across the street to see Misty and Stormy, and being just a short bike ride across the bridge to get onto Assateague Island. We biked everywhere from this hotel and can't say enough about it. Continental breakfast included with the rate.

Room Tip: Ask for a room towards the back of the hotel close to the pool.

My husband and I stayed there for 3 nights in June, 2014. We selected it based on other Tripadvisor reviews and because we really wanted something that wasn't part of a big chain. We were VERY HAPPY with our selection. The staff was warm and welcoming from beginning to end. The complementary breakfast was more than we expected - included a hot entree like waffles (brought to your table) or scrambled eggs. The peaches on the breakfast bar were so good that we had to ask if they were home-canned (they were individually frozen). The room was nicely furnished and very comfortable.

Based on a recommendation from the front desk, we spent one day on a boat tour (Daisey's Island Cruises) - well worth it if you want to see ponies and other wildlife, as well as getting away from the heat for a few hours! We also rented bikes, biked around the Wildlife Refuge, went to the beach and flew a kite, saw an eagle and some turtles, ...

The location was perfect for us - within a mile of the Wildlife Refuge, next to a bike rental. Two nights, we got our dinner from a local take-out place and ate at the picnic tables at the hotel. A perfect way to spend the evening in Chincoteague.

Loved the atmosphere at the Refuge Inn. Very friendly, helpful and welcoming. My only comment (and it was true at 4 different places that we stayed on our recent vacation) is that the air conditioning unit is kind of loud.

I would definitely recommend the Refuge Inn. And, I think it's important to support the independent merchants in scenic areas!

Thank you so much for the excellent review! Unfortunately, the loud PTAC units are a necessary evil at the beach (but luckily they do a great job of cooling the rooms, which is the most important thing!) We hope you'll stay with us again soon.

We picked this place because of the good reviews, and were not disappointed. Nice, friendly people, clean and well-maintained building. Our room was comfortable and nicely decorated with little touches that made it feel more like a home than a hotel. Each room has a little patio or balcony with either a view of a nice garden/pool area or of the ponies. By the way, "herd" means two. And these ponies have ears accutely attuned to the sound of the coin-operated corn dispensers, and they come running accordingly! The location is unbeatable, right at the base of the bridge to Assateague. Refuge Inn had us pretty spoiled to good service; our next stop was a high-dollar hotel in Baltimore that was literally twice the price, and although it was nice, I would pick Refuge Inn over it any day.

Room Tip: If your room is on the "pony" side, I wouldn't chooses the first floor because the pat...

We stayed at the Refuge Inn, in July for 3 nights and had nothing but a spectacular time.
Before we even arrived we experienced how helpful the staff was, we had to change our room type the day after we booked (which was under 72 hours of check-in) but they gladly changed our room to a King Size room to two double beds and the only added fee was the extra adult in the room fee. Checking in was a breeze, we arrived right around 4pm and checked in within minutes along with several other people checking in.

The room was very spacious with two queen beds, a table with two chairs and another desk which was great for us to eat in our room. The balcony is covered which was awesome due to the seagulls flying around. The housekeeping service didn't knock our door during our whole stay and they were very polite and never asked when we would be going out so they could clean (we were the second room from where they started) but they just went past and came back. The beds were comfortable the air conditioner kept the room nice and cool as well.

The breakfast was in the gift shop as many people have stated it is small but there are tables if you beat the rush of people or there are picnic tables not far outside or we ate in our room one morning. The special items were the only hot item however, they were hot and fresh. The rest of the breakfast was basic with cereal, bread, bagels. There is a McDonalds right next door and a diner across the street if want a different breakfast options. We found there to many lunch and dinner options in the very local vicinity of the inn.

The pool and hot tub never was really that busy when we went in. The most people ever really saw in there was probably about 10 people if that. The pool goes from 3 to 5 feet than drops down to 8 feet which makes it fun for everyone in the family. The pool also offers a covered area on the 3 and 4 foot side which is perfect for anyone trying to escape the sun.

The two ponies were very friendly and enjoyed the corn and grain that we gave to them. They even let us pet them. Was really nice parking and calling them over even without food they came by to say hi. Great bonus for anyone traveling with a child who doesn't see ponies or other wildlife often (being from the city we fall right into that category).

The location of the Inn was perfect for what we had in mind which was to spend most of our time on the Assateague Island which was a quick drive away. We also ended up renting bicycles right next door and were able to bike ride right to Assateague island and was very safe and easy bike ride to do with a child.
