“Convenient Kayak Rentals”
Reviewed 25 June 2014

This review is for the marina's rental services, not the cottage lodging. Snug Harbor Marina is on the Assateague side of Chincoteague Island (on the channel that separates the two islands and is just down the road from Assateauge Explorers and Etta's Channelside Restaurant. It rents out kayaks (single or double), canoes, and powerboats.

Kayaks are available for half-day or full-day rentals, but each half day is a set time -- meaning you can rent one for the morning (until noon) or the afternoon, but if you want one for a few hours in the middle of the day, you'll have to pay the full-day rate (which is just $10 more than the 1/2 rate). Also, rentals as slightly cheaper if you pay in cash, vs. credit card.

The marina offers kayak tours, but it's not difficult to find the ponies without joining a tour -- they seem to gather near the lighthouse north of the marina or at a beach south of the marina. Of course, they might also be inland and not clearly visible from the water at any location. The marina can point you in the right direction to either location and give advice on whether the ponies have been spotted.

In general, the marina staff was friendly and easy-going. The kayaks were in okay shape (but seemed unusually narrow / small). The rentals aren't cheap, but that's to be expected on a vacation island (rate were comparable to other rental places).

Recommended by a friend, this place is a little slice of tranquility. It is quiet, comfortable and peaceful. The cottages are clean and well equipped. Be aware that they are small though. They were built in the 1950's and you can tell. Comfortable for 2, pushing it for 4. We were in #9. That being said, the proximity to the water is wonderful. Being able to take your morning coffee 50 feet out the front door to watch the birds and boats was great. The owners are very accommodating and truly care about every aspect of your stay.

I found Snug Harbor Cottages on short notice. So short that traditional deposit methods were not possible. Basia was enthusiastic and accommodating! I normally opt for a swank full service property but needed some rest and tranquility... and some down to earth grounding. The moment I arrived the horses were visible on Assateaque Island. I was directed to my cottage. It was quaint, warm and comfortable. The dock was steps from our door. The only sounds to be heard from inside the cottage were an occasional boat motor. I appreciated that during the visit I was able to enjoy privacy and not have to open the door for wait staff. It was MY little private quiet place although Basia was near to answer any questions. Mothers Day morning Capt. John provided a tour of the waterways. He was engaging and genuinely as excited as I was about the experience with the ponies. I WILL be returning and would highly recommend to anyone that will listen a visit to Snug Harbor Cottages and Marina.

We stayed here in September and we had the greatest and most relaxing time ever. The location is unbeatable…right on the water with the view I will be dreaming of until the next year when we go there again  Our cottage was cute, cozy and very clean. It had everything we needed and more including a kitchen with handmade cabinets, granite countertops and pillow top bed in a bedroom. Customer service was outstanding, the owners definitely care about their guests and will go above and beyond to make sure you will enjoy your vacation. There is plenty to do right on the premises like fishing, crabbing, boating, kayaking etc.. We rented kayaks and spend all day on the water which was very enjoyable and relaxing. We also went on a guided sunset cruise with Captain John which was our favorite part of the whole vacation! He took us very close to the ponies, we also saw a beautiful, big bold eagle. He also knew where ospreys nest so we could see them as well as quite a few egrets and herons. On a way back to the marina he spotted a whole bunch of dolphins! They were jumping all over the boat saying hi to us  It was incredible! We will definitely be back .

We stayed there in the fall and had the best time we have had for a long time. The place just makes you relaxed as soon as you check in. Cottages are right by the water with an oustanding view of the lighthouse and National Park. Many morinings we had coffee by the tiki huts and we saw all kinds of rare birds and wild horses hanging out right across the water. The sunrises and sunsets were beautiful and we truly enjoyed our stay. Location is definatelly best in town. Cottages were very cozy and clean and had everything we needed for a week stay. After spending a week at Snug Harbor we came back home completly rejuvenated and I felt like a brand new person. This was exactly what we needed and we are already making plans to come back!

Room Tip: we had a 1BR cottage which was perfect for 2 people ( you could easily fit 2 more on a futon bed) bu...

Visited Snug Harbor 1st weekend in October. Was so excited to get to the see the wild ponies. Well guess what? The government shut-down prevented anyone from getting into the wildlife preserve on Assateague Island. The had it closed down.
Wasn't going to let that spoil the weekend. Snug Harbor is a nature lover's paradise. If you love sunrise & sunset pictures, you are in luck because you can take both from the docks! We rented a boat on Saturday & spent the entire day on the water, fishing (not catching anything) and watching the great collection of birds there. The ducks all come every morning to get fed, because someone has them spoiled.
The cottage was pretty much what I expected, nothing glamorous, but clean. It had a full kitchen, not that I planned to cook on my vacation. It had plates, coffee cups, pots, pans & utensils. I did not find any glasses at all. Not even plastic cups. Good thing I brought my own!
It's not like a hotel, because they don't provide you with coffee makings only the coffe maker. We had to go to the store to get coffee, milk & sugar.
They also did not come to make the bed or change the towels in the bathroom. We were only there for 2 nights, so not an issue, but if we had stayed longer we would have need more towels. The bathroom & shower were very tiny. I would have liked a little more room in there. There wasn't even a vanity to put your toothbrush & toothpaste on. We also could have used a broom & dustpan because you end up tracking a ton of sand into the cottage. Couple of throw rugs next to the bed would help too, so you can wipe your feet off before getting into bed.
In the off season, it was quiet & peaceful. Couple of other guests, but the place was not full or noisy. I imagine in the summer it's really "hopping".
John & Basia, the owners, were very nice. John helped us to find all the stores & restaurants that we needed. He knows alot about the island & the history of it, so if you get time stop & have a chat with him. I like small family owned businesses, as the owners seem to take so much pride in their places. John & Basia kept this place spotless. The boats were cleaned out upon return, the beach chairs were cleaned every day, the tiki bars & tables were always wiped down.
We hope to return again to see the ponies. Maybe next October?

Room Tip: We stayed in Cabin number 3 that did not face the water. Next time I will request a cabin that face...

This was Our second visit to Snug Harbor this summer, so now we know that we did not just luck out on the first visit. This visit was as enjoyable as the first. If you are looking for a vacation to get away from it all, and relax or have fun on the water, this is the place to go. First I will talk about the cottages. The cottages are simple and cozy. Cooking utensils, Plates, pots and pans, silverware, a stove and a full-size refrigerator are provided. There is a TV in the bedroom, and a TV in the kitchen - dining - living room area. The bed is a pillow top bed, very comfortable. Although the cottages are older, the place both times has been very clean. The parents of the owners take charge of the cleaning so they are Exceptionally conscientious. This is a family run business, and special care is given to the customers. Snug Harbor Offers boat rentals, boat tours, fishing equipment, bait, crabbing equipment, it's all self sufficient. I have even seen one young guy catch five little sharks in two days. There are two lounging areas, both on the marina, or you can set up your own chairs in front of your cabin. There are a couple of tiki bars for the guests to use. This place is dog friendly. It is only a quick 10 minute drive to the beach. I love the beach in Chincoteague. It lacks tourist commercialization, as does the majority of the town. The beaches are clean, they are open until 10 PM, and you can park right along the edge of the sand, with a very short walk to the water. Chincoteague is a small town, with several waterfront restaurants, great little food shacks serving some of the best food I have ever had, and Several gift and T-shirt shops. However, Chincoteague is not packed full of tourist shops, and they are not back to back and crammed in, they are scattered through the neighborhood. If you want to do boardwalk shopping, Ocean City is only an hour away. There are wild horses that roam in the animal refuge And along the edge of the beach across from Snug Harbor Marina. In the summer they have a pony swim where they round up all of the ponies and they swim from the island to the beach, an event that attracts a lot of people. Quite a quaint little town, i look forward to next summer.
