“Consistently excellent cuisine”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 January 2014

I have been to the Hazel River Inn a number of times, with the same partner, and we have always had excellent food. The emphasis is central European, with a strong selection of wines, many of them from Virginia; and the cooking has, in our experience, always been first-rate. And we have had service of that same high standard; but also (less frequently) service that was enthusiastic and attentive but pretty amateurish by comparison with the sophisticated offerings on the menu. Even in those cases, though, the excellence of the cuisine has far outshone the comparatively less impressive service; and the atmosphere - that of a nineteenth-century American country inn - is utterly charming.

“Pleasant Experience”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 December 2013

Since other restaurants in the area were closed on a Monday, we stopped in to read the menu and chose not to eat German food. We ordered the Caesar salad and seafood tower. The seafood tower has small portions of she crab soup, crab cakes, smoked salmon, shrimp, and fried oysters. All of the food was enjoyable and the server was very attentive. A few days after our eating here we realized how much more reasonable this place is than others nearby. It was not crowded during our visit so it was fairly quiet. The interior has been changed, but the exterior still has the old signage from when the space was Yowell hardware store. I used to go there as a child with my father.

“German food in rathskeller”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 November 2013

The Rathskeller has great German food. http://hazelriverinn.com/the_rathskeller.php Veal schnitzel was excellent with superior accompaniments of a breaded potato pancake and red cabbage, as well as spinach. It was enough to share if you also order some of the well-priced sides like spaetzle and potato salad. Unlike previous visits, service was quick. We were out in an hour. Bill for two including one beer but not tax, tip or dessert--$50!

“Avoid Like the Plague”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 September 2013

Stopped in for lunch this week. It was horrible, really horrible .... from the service to the food. The server was not trained, and very inexperienced.

Ordered the Greek salad with an addition of grilled chicken with dressing on side. The salad arrived smothered in dressing; so it was sent back. Arrived again without the dressing; but sadly the chicken was served raw in the middle. We were still charged the $2 upcharge for the chicken addition ... really??? Also the salad came with onion (not listed as an ingredient on the menu); and the plate was peppered with pepper (maybe for a Caesar salad).

Thankful that I had Zantac with me ... as that was what I had for dessert!
