This was the dirtiest motel I have ever been in. Mold in shower. 7 lights in parking lot, 5 burned out. Stains on everything. Walls dirty. AC smelled.

Last minute reservation found me here right off US29. Apparently I got a "suite", which provides a small couch (love seat), sink, mini-fridge, lots of empty cabinets, coffee maker, and maybe a microwave. I didn't really have time to use it, arriving late at night. However, I did want to chill out with some TV, and the TV in the room did not work. It was as if it wasn't connected to the cable, and had no external antenna either. There were just 2 channels that had audio, and a very "snowy" picture. Most of the 40 or so channels listed on the card in the room didn't come in at all. Nothing.

The bathroom was nice, clean, though small, and not many amenities. 2 tiny cheap bars of soap, no shampoo. Sink was small, as was area around it. Shower was fine. Towels good.

In the room, the walls were extensively marked up and stained. There were 2 large scorch marks from an iron on the window seat cushion, and the window itself was broken. A long crack was covered up with clear packing tape. The room air was stale, faintly of cigarettes. Interestingly, the air in the hallway outside the room was perfectly fresh. Maybe people gather and smoke outside the windows and the air unit draws in that bad air. Who knows.

The front desk staff was very nice, helpful, polite. The common areas were pretty clean and shiny. Breakfast was very sparse, but decent brands for what they had (pre-wrapped Otis Spunkmeyer muffins; mostly blueberry, a few chocolate chip; cereal - Honey Nut Cheerios and plain Cheerios; 2-3 types of juice; 1 type of coffee, 1 type of milk (half gallon of whole milk sitting in an ice bucket, which ran out), 1 type of creamer; some bagels).

Not sure we got the best rate available, but we booked through a travel site and got a rate that was about 25% higher than the rate sheet they had me sign. Not sure if that's the middleman markup or not, but it might be worth trying direct or calling. More than a few hotels in the central VA area refused to honor their rates in coupon books you find at the state welcome centers as you come in on the interstate. Not sure if that is fair trade or not. Maybe they only have a limited number of such rooms, but I felt very taken advantage of by most and would not leave home again without a reservation in hand. Even if you call ahead, I'm told that if you don't give a credit card number and get a confirmation number, you may get a different story/rate upon arrival. Caveat Emptor.

In sum, Microtel is showing some promise under Wyndham ownership, but they're not there yet. They need to hold guests responsible for damage so that the next person (in this case, me) gets a room that is in decent shape. In my case, the bed and bath were ... those are the most important things. But the TV didn't work, the window was broken, and the walls were dirty. I wouldn't rush back.

Room Tip: You might get less smoke in your room if there's not a sidewalk below the window.
