This is a recently-renovated, budget hotel along I-81 near Troutville/Daleville. My goal was just to have a clean, quiet, warm place to sleep. Amenities were secondary.

As indicated by my review title, I found two major shortcomings of this otherwise nice-for-the-price hotel. One was that my reservation, made through Ex-----, did not make it into their system. I spent 30 minutes at the front desk with the clerk and on hold with the customer service person at that travel site to resolve the matter (eventually via fax). There was some comment from the agent about Super 8's "centralized reservation system", but based on their antiquated front desk phone (which might have not even been touch-tone), I suspected a system incompatibility, possibly due to Super 8's own system. They ought not offer rooms through booking services that (according to the front desk person) regularly fail to transmit info properly.

The second big problem was the overwhelming stench of cigarette smoke, even in the nonsmoking wing of the building. In theory, this is separated from the smoking side of the building. The lobby is in between as well as multiple sets of access doors. Perhaps people just book nonsmoking and smoke anyway - I don't know. But it was terrible, especially with the heat on (and as it was sub-freezing outside, the heat needed to be on). I left as soon as I could in the morning once I tried out the breakfast at 6am. And it wasn't just my room - the whole nonsmoking wing smelled of cigarettes. I didn't even see people smoking outside - it just was there in the air.

The breakfast area is quite small, and easily gets overcrowded, and the breadth of choices is pretty small, but the quality of items is good.

I would consider returning only if the chain goes entirely nonsmoking. They obviously have trouble enforcing nonsmoking or controlling the drift of the smell.

Note, my lower ratings reflect air quality - the room furnishings, decor, etc., is notably better than average for the category. Also, if you don't mind chancing a "no vacancy" situation, this place advertises in the hotel coupon books found at the state welcome center. Their deals are for walk-ins only, but you can call ahead to check availability. Turns out in my case the hotel would have gotten the same amount for themselves; the excess I paid went to Ex-----.

Room tip: If you're a smoker or live with one, any room will do. If you're not, and smoke bothers you, move on.
