“Fine dining, tucked away in fairfax”

Kitchen is master of Tyrollean style Italian. Flavors combos are sublime. Don't sleep on the meats here; prosciutto, lamb are some of the best in DMV. The bellinis are Salut!

“An Italian Genius resides in the Kitchen”
Reviewed 18 July 2013

My husband and I have eaten at Villa Mozart in Fairfax City numerous times over the past few years and the restaurant has never missed a beat in service, preparation, plating, and overall good, quality Italian cuisine. The variety of offerings on the menu is remarkable for the location and size of the restaurant. You must order pasta - the chef has several items on the menu from his home region of Italy that I have never experienced before and you really cannot make a bad selection. For starters, the squid appetizer is unique - what lies before you looks like a pasta dish, but the noodles are the squid and the seasoning is unbelievable. The wine selection is well done, with offerings of some really solidly good Italian wines (my personal favorite) but also offers many other choices.

The interior of the restaurant, located in an old frame house across from the Courthouse, is sleek, contemporary and very understated. No red and white tablecloths with candles in wine bottles here! The artwork is a collection of photographs, most in black and white, of architectural styles and the small rooms are immediately inviting and more intimate in feel.

The price for your meal will also surprise you. We have ordered from the menu a la carte and also selected their prix fixe lunches and/or dinners and consider both a bargain for the quality of the food. If you decide to go, you may want to make a reservation - especially for dinner. It is no longer a buried gem in suburban Virginia, but can easily be considered a "destination" restaurant for Washington, DC.

“Excellent birthday dinner for a "foodie"”
Reviewed 13 June 2013

This was our second time at Villa Mozart, coming six months after a surprise birthday dinner with close friends and family. This time was also a birthday, and the menu didn't disappoint. The restaurant's name may suggest a fairly old-fashioned Austrian restaurant, but the style is northern Italian, with some modern touches. The menu includes first courses, pasta courses, and second courses in the Italian fashion, but a prix-fixe option is also available and usually a great deal (pick one from each course, for less than the cost if ordered separately).

A "caviar" of red beets was a terrific starter, and the saddle of rabbit also an excellent main dish. But for us the stars were the pasta dishes, in this case a southern German spaetzle which was light and fluffy, as well as a spinach knoedel which was also a stand-out. The wine list is very good and the desserts included some modern variations, sorbets and foams, which were light and refreshing, not at all what one might expect from the "Mozart" theme. (One note: our waiter hadn't yet learned to pour without leaving some wine dripping on the side of the bottle - a small but noticeable gaffe in a restaurant of this caliber.)

“Mostly Very Good, Meat-filled Ravioli Tasteless”
Reviewed 7 May 2013

We had arugula salad, ZUPPA DI STAGGIONE, tortelli and risotto ollo. We've had some of these before. While everything was good, it all seemed a little less so than last time. The ravioli was the most disappointing--the filling was pureed into mush and tasteless. We had the same wine as we'd had before, and it was excellent-- the Terrabianca Campaccio Super Tuscan '07. I don't think we will make the trek here again--traffic on I-66 on Friday night was awful.
