“Pretty Bad”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 February 2008

After a drive of 11 hours through torrential rain from New York my son and I finally arrived at the Days Inn in Farmville, VA. (We drove there for an Open House at Longwood University the next day, which is right up the road.) We were exhausted. The man who checked us in was not particularly friendly however he was efficient. The lobby was extremely small but fine. We asked for a second floor room and were given room 212. (The upstairs rooms have an indoor walkway. The 1st floor rooms you can drive right up to the door of the room.) As we entered the room I immediately saw into the bathroom and thought it was dirty. It turned out what I thought was dirt was the marble of the sink however after further inspection there was crud around various parts of the bathroom. On the plus side the beds turned out to be very comfortable however I couldn't help wondering what might be lurking underneath the mattress!! The general feel of the room was pretty cheap. The furniture was very old and worn away and you could tell this was a motel that the owners did not really care too much about. As far as television there were not many channels to choose from. It didn't even seem that the pen in the room was fresh and new. It was not on the desk with a pad where I have normally found one, but in the drawer with the phone book. On the plus side, the heater worked very well and I liked that it was not an energy saver (however bad that may sound) because I need a constant hum when I try to fall asleep. The bathroom also had one of those heat lights which I also appreciate. In the morning there was supposed to be free continental breakfast. I expected cereal of some sort.. Very scant pickings. A couple of bagels and coffee and juice and no place designated to sit and eat it if you chose to have something. I commented to my son that if he ended up attending Longwood I would definately check out one of the other places to stay nearby.

There are not many choices for motels in Farmville, VA where we traveled to visit our son at his college. We booked a room here for ourselves and grandparent because of its proximity to the school. We had previously stayed here in 2005 and found it adequate and clean for an overnight stay. Unfortunately, the property had deteriorated quite a bit from 9/05 to 9/06; furnishings were tired to worn, bathroom floor was filthy looking, carpet was stained and smelly. The entire motel smelled of mildew and damp and I wonder if it hadn't been totally flooded. The first room we were put in had a horrible smell and a dehumidifier running. We were pretty surprised that management would even consider putting guests in the room. We were changed to an upstairs room at our request which was somewhat better but this place definitely has seen better - and drier - days. This Days Inn is only better than sleeping in your car on the roadside. If you have a choice, stay elsewhere.

  • Liked — location near school
  • Disliked — nasty mildew & mold smell, worn, dirty carpeting and filthy bathroom floor

This motel does not deliver acceptable value or service. The rooms are shabby, the fittings worn out and the overall impression is of steppping back into the 1970s - and a badly-maintained version of the 70s at that! For what it provides this motel is expensive in the extreme. It is just about bearable for one night, and then only for an individual or a couple, but certainly not for longer and definitely not for families with young children. As tourists making a two-week tour of Civil War battlefields this was the only motel or hotel we encountered on our journey about which we felt so negatively.
