“Lovely setting”
Reviewed 1 April 2014

We stayed for l night for my birthday on the 30th March. It was a very busy Mothers Day in the restaurant but we were shown to our room fairly quick. The TV did not work and we were moved to another room and for the inconvenience we were given a complimentary drink which was a nice touch.
The shower was amazing with great pressure and the tea and coffee were good as well.
However we got very little sleep due to the noise of 4 industrial fridges with the generator kicking in every 5 minutes throughout the night. We found out what it was at breakfast the next morning. In hindsight I would have done without the TV and had a good nights sleep.
The breakfast was average and the price you pay for the room I really don't think you should have to do your own toast. I expect this at a Travel Lodge.
It is a lovely location and if we came back I would make sure we weren't backing onto the kitchen area.

Room Tip: Make sure you are away from the fridges unless you sleep really well

My husband and I (both early 30's) wanted a break away from our hectic work lives and we were so thrilled with the White Horse. The room (partridge) was lovely and comfy with great furnishings and the bathroom had a great copper bath tub. The bar and restaurant were also beautifully decorated, we spent some time snuggled by the fire with the papers and enjoyed fantastic service from the lovely owner and all the staff - they couldn't do enough to help us out!
The food was delicious and there was enough to keep us eating there for both of our 2 night stay. Huge wine list and the prices weren't ridiculous!
I would love to go back and enjoy one of the Stag rooms with the hot tub and I think it would be a perfect place to go for a big celebration and enjoy a large dinner around the huge dining table.
It is in the middle of nowhere but that is totally the point - we drove to the coast and to a nearby spa but always enjoyed coming back and spending time relaxing at the White Horse.
I am recommending The White Horse to all I know!! Top marks!

The White Horse is in the middle of nowhere, but it is very handy for Goodwood. Our little room (Roe) had a large comfy bed and we squeezed a Z-bed in too for me and my 2 small sons. Giant TV, excellent coffee & tea stuff (the fresh coffee and plongeur were fab), and two bottles of water too. Excellent hair-dryer - not that Mrs W was with us. Small shower room but with a tremendous shower with excellent pressure. Good quality smellies, towels & robes. Loved the little bottle of fresh milk left on the doorstep in the morning. Price included a top rate breakfast. Quite expensive for the size of room, but we really enjoyed The White Horse a lot.

Brilliant service start to finish - stayed in the Stag Room with hot tub - it was very comfortable with attention to detail mini garden with hot tub private and had nice furniture. Drank bubbles in hot tub with was delightful. Ate in the restaurant and had a fabulous meal with super selection of wines. A really wonderful great. Highly recommended

We used to eat at the White Horse when it was well known as a high quality restaurant and it was always excellent. The establishment then underwent something of a transformation, changed its name but now it is back as the White Horse again. Now instead of being a restaurant it's a pub with rooms.

The room we had was very comfortable, well fitted out and the bed was both huge and extremely comfortable ensuring a lovely and restful night's sleep. The room was pricey but on balance could not be faulted.

The food though was a disappointment. I suppose I was harking back to a time when it was renowned as a restaurant. The menu is not very imaginative but to be honest is probably what I should have expected from a pub. Sea bass with orange and fennel was good, the fish was a good size and the fennel and clams worked well with the sauce vierge. Very good, not "fine dining" but that isn't what the White Horse aspires to these days.

The biggest downer was the crispy pork belly. What was delivered was actually a pork chop with a piece of crackling on the top - unforgiveable. If they didn't have pork belly they should say so and not pass off something completely different.

The dessert of crème brûlée was fine. Top marks though for the wine, a 1996 L'eglise-Clinet, which had obviously been well kept. It was a real delight. I wonder if it was part of the cellar that was maintained during the transition from the "old" White Horse, in any event it was truly lovely. If the waiting staff however are not familiar with the names of the wines then why not resort to the simple solution of numbering them in the wine list? It would save embarrassment.

For breakfast I just had toast and coffee. The bread on offer was Kingsmill. I didn't actually think anyone ever bought Kingsmill if they had a choice. I thought it was only available in convenience stores for people to buy in desperation when all the real shops had shut and they needed to mop up ten pints of lager. It is tasteless and the most un-breadlike bread imaginable. How about a choice of white or brown bread for toast rather than slices of cardboard that don't fall into either category? It's not difficult, it's not expensive.

The eating area is rather pleasant, it gets better the further you are away from the bar. The interior design is bog standard pub refit, unimaginative and predictable. The decoration is clichéd and hackneyed with no nod towards inventiveness or irony. Why oh why do you need to play terrible background music in the bar area? The music let's call it, was dreadful, added nothing but annoyance and did nothing to create anything that might be called ambience.

All in all - very good accommodation, good quality wines, just don't expect mind-blowing food, it is just a pub after all. Will we go back? No I'm afraid not.

Just returned from a weekend break at the White Horse. From the moment we arrived to the time we left we just couldn't fault it. The staff were extremely friendly and made you feel as if you were a friend not a guest. From the bar man chatting to us about the Sipsmith gin, to the waitress topping up our tea whilst we enjoyed the sun on the terrace, to Nikki the manageress who was very attentive and friendly. The food was delicious. The restaurant a lovely setting. Our hotel room was lovely, well decorated, cosy and more importantly very clean. Alex Polizzi, the hotel inspector would have had trouble finding fault with it! Maybe just the fact that there were no pillow protectors on the pillows!
We will certainly recommend it to our friends and family for a chilled out weekend with great service, staff, food and nothing to fault.
Thank you Nikki and all your staff for making it such a perfect weekend. You even got the sun to shine for us!

This is a place I would recommend. We stayed Two nights mid week. As it was our wedding anniversary we went for the Stag Room as it had the hot tub. The staff were incredibly helpful throughout our stay, Mark. The room with its very modern layout, underfloor heating, large tv and sheepskin rugs everywhere.
The bar and restaurant are well laid out and the décor is fantastic, (the designer can come and do my house anytime). The service was good on both evenings with great personal service.
I will be returning in the future.

Room Tip: Go for a room with the hot tub, it makes it.
