“A can't miss!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 October 2013

Horton Vineyards was a side trip when we were staying at Shenandoah Crossing. The grounds are beautiful! We went in the summer but I'm certain they are gorgeous in the fall and winter. The building is impressive and inviting and the "show room" was large (not crowded) and fun to check out the merchandise.

The wine tasting was free when we went - please check their site for information as wineries can have free "tasting days" or perhaps they are always free tastings.

The woman serving the white wines was a little cold and uncouth, but the rest of the staff were amazing. We had a difficult time picking just a few bottles (budgeting) as they had such a wide variety - something for everyone.

Make the stop.

“Don't waste your time...”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 September 2013

Do not waste your time stopping at Horton Vineyards. The wine is terrible and the service is the worst. My husband and I have been to so many wonderful vineyards in the Charlottsville area and I am so disapointed we wasted our time stopping at Horton.
I have never been to a winery where the service is so bad, they could care less about their customers. Mr. Horton....you should hire new staff and perhaps a new winemaker.

“Not worth the stop.”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 September 2013

We stopped on Sunday and were completely underwhelmed by the weak, watery, flabby wines. The building is is faux French castle - like a bad beach miniture golf course. My husband knew something was wrong when we walked in and he saw a box of cheap cigars sitting on the desk in the office. The tasting room ceiling was filthy and there were flies, nats and fruit flies all over. There were 42 wines to try; from Virginia varietals to obscure international varietals, to fruit wines to "chocolate" wines. The tasting is free and you can try 10 wines. I guess when you try that many you're bound to stumble across something.
As we left - the Owner was lighting up a cigarette in his office - not the odor you want to smell next to the tasting room.

They had a nice sparkling viogner that made us wonder why they don't focus on a few very good wines. Horton needs to take a long hard look at their business model. Do less and do it very well. Refurbish their facility, I would rather taste great wine in a shed than bad wine in a dirty, cheesy building. Make sure the person blending the wines has some taste buds left. And - NO SMOKING IN THE TASTING ROOM.

“Mediocre wine, terrible service (nasty, lethargic, irritable staff)”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 September 2013

My husband and I stopped at this vineyard on our way from Charlottesville to DC. The staff had nothing to say about the wine. They ignored us. Our three children (12, 10 and 8) tried to play on the lawn but one of the staff members yelled at them and told them if they touched the grape vines (they were not anywhere near the vines) that they would call the police. If they paid half as much attention to their customers that they did to yelling at our children, they might sell more wine. By the way, the wine is mediocre at best. Luckily, the tasting was free. So I guess we got our money's worth.

“Don't waste your time, especially if you expect good wine and informative pourers...”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 September 2013 via mobile

We went here on the recommendation of a fellow vacationer. Bad idea. We should have read the reviews first. Upon our arrival, our disheveled, dispassionate, monosyllabic pourer asked, "oh, you want a tasting?" as if it was an inconvenience. Downhill from there. And in spite of the wide selection of wines, there were few decent ones to speak of. Bland and characterless. Much like our host.
