This is a small spot with friendly staff that serves very good food at low prices. We had an Arepas, cornmeal bread stuffed with your choice of items for $3, a Pastelito with chicken, like an empanada made with wheat dough, for $2 and a sandwich Gocho with fries for $5.75 (French toast bread, chicken, onion, garlic sauce, pineapple sauce and mayo). Everything was made fresh and was delicious. A great little place.

This place is operated by a friendly Venezuelan lady who prepares Venezuelan dishes which are not only very tasty but won't be especially unfamiliar to you. The cuisine seems to be based on hearty meats prepared in a skillet with various vegetables. It's not Mexican; frankly, it's tastier than Mexican. The prices in this rather plain but comfortable restaurant are low: about $10. for an entree. I recommend two special dishes, which are the Cruzado, a medley of meats and shrimp and vegetables at $15. and the Bandeja, which is a sausage dish at $13.50. The amount of food that comes with these two dishes is probably more than you'll be able to eat: the portions are very large indeed. For those who like the hearty northern European meats, the dishes won't seem unusual at all - just more interesting to eat because of the spicing (which is not extreme). Beer is available at a reasonable prices.

Thus is a hidden gem in Harrisonburg. The yucca and plantains were absolutely perfect. Lunch for three was under $20! The authentic sauces are fresh made and the food... Just incredible!

so while we were in Harrisburg we looked on line and found Arepera Las Chamas. We were so lucky to find this place. it's a little hole in the wall. The restaurant is covered in Venezuelan flags and pictures. It's the first place that i have been to that sells Yuca since I was in Venezuela. The food is authentic South American. The empinadas are sooo good. they have beef, chicken, veggi and cheese. They are handmade there. So it takes about 15 min. to get them to the table. They also have three different sauces on the table. A parsley sauce, garlic and hot sauce. They are very watery but extremely flavorful. Fried Yuca was right on. Not sure if they had boiled or not. Prices were very reasonable. Since I had not had real South American food in a while we kinda over ordered and had to roll out of the restaurant. The Employees are actually from Venezuela and are very nice. We chatted for a while which was nice. So the next time your in Harrisonburg you have to try this place.
