“Great anniversary experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 August 2014

We celebrated our 45th wedding anniversary at the Homestead and it was a great experience. The ambiance, dining, friendliness and service of staff were all first-rate. The Homestead is located in Western Virginia in the mountains. We had delicious dinners in the Main Dining Room and in the Jefferson Grill. Hope to go back next year!

I really enjoyed my stay here. We spent five nights at Homestead. There are plenty of things to do if you want and also great areas to sit around and read or just watch people. The property is very nice. The people are nice. We had a two bedroom suite and it was very comfortable. There are all kinds of different angles to this place. I am sure some rooms are better and different from others. I love sitting on the big front porch. You can just imagine how it was back in the day. The afternoon tea was nice but could be done better. My only complaint that the dining room service or the speed of attention could be faster. The property is beautiful and a very nice experience.

Room was filthy with extreme MOLD in Air vent. Made family feel horrible and sick. Front desk did nothing about this and seemed to not even care. The lazy river addition is a nice add on and the kids game area, Downtime.

Loved the Homestead - absolutely beautiful and lots of things to do. Every thing worked well and we can't wait to return. Saw many families with kids and understand it would be a great place for a family vacation. Old Course is a beautiful, if difficult, golf experience.

We checked out a few days ago, with our 5 and 11 year old children. None of us wanted to leave the warm lazy river. We were very pleased with the quality of food and variety at the breakfast. Unlike another reviewer, we did not encounter running children or sloppy/dirty attire at breakfast (maybe the customer in question was a VIP or there was some other reason he was not asked to remove his cap?).
We encountered many families who supervised their children carefully and everyone we encountered was friendly. We have been to resorts where children were running wild and this was not like that at all. Children are not adults and do not have the same self control, but it is always more pleasant to be around children who are being encouraged to be respectful and patient, etc. Our son has special needs and he had many challenges while there, but we removed him from the dining room or other spaces in which he would be too disruptive.
Our room was very clean and the bathroom/vanity area was adequate. The beds were comfortable. We were in a newer wing, so maybe that was a plus. We enjoyed an amazing tour of the building, full of history and fascinating stories. Our 11 year old was on top of the world.
Our archery instructor was helpful, patient, and very friendly. The arcade/bowling at Downtime was a hit. The pools were very warm, and service at the pools was friendly. There was no charge for the fitness center, which was clean and had a good set of machines and weights. We will be back, despite the fact that it is a 7+ hour drive for us!

This is my second trip to the Homestead, but the first since Omni took over. We stayed in the oldest part of the hotel (at our request) and had a small, but clean and well appointed room. The atmosphere is wonderful in the old section. The room was quiet, clean, with updated fixtures in the bath. The view was incredible (fifth floor). The weather is beautiful, the staff very friendly, and the amenities are plentiful.

Wifi was spotty, but I didn't go to the mountains to check my Facebook. Breakfast in the dining hall was as expected - an expensive buffet, but the food was acceptable. There is also a small food shop if you don't want the large meal.

Overall a great experience.

Room Tip: Rooms in the garden wing are newer, but decorated to look original. The original part of the hotel i...

This historic hotel is beautiful-from the décor with all kinds of photos documenting past looks to the grounds, pool and spa. Our king bed room was large and clean. The resort staff were friendly and service was good other than the on site restaurants where things were hit or miss-unfriendly server at the Jefferson and general ambivalence at the Casino. The exception being the waitress at the Sam Snead Tavern. Claudia was warm, efficient and obviously well known as tables around us had requested her! The food at each of the restaurants was excellent. Most of our time was spent at the spa and the spa service was wonderful. If you do not have a spa treatment the spa pool and locker room amenities were available for $40 per day(in addition to the $12 per day resort fee). The spa is an adult only environment, has its own natural hot spring and is a very relaxing experience.
