This tiny little village sprang up in front of me (quite unexpectedly) after hours of mountain driving. It is nestled in the valley of the Allegheny mountains in western Virginia close to the West Virginia border. There are many original settlement building from the late 1700's, most of which can be rented and are part of a bed and breakfast that lets you pick which building you want! My new husband and I only paid $90 per night for an entire 4 bedroom house to ourselves, including pastry and coffee in the morning! There is a large waterfall a short distance from town and plenty of wilderness to explore. 5 Miles down the road is the village of Warm Springs. Home to the famous Homestead lodge. But forget staying there unless you have unlimited funds to blow. It's been there since the 1700's as well and is breathtaking..and huge! See the link below. Hot Springs has an excellent restaurant in an old mill house, day spa, and an adorable art gallery with many local artists' work. I plan to travel there as often as possible. You will feel totally submerged in another time period. If you want to get away from the city, nothing could be better!
