Owner description: For three centuries, our family has made our way of life in the rolling landscapes of Fauquier County, Virginia. We have proudly served as stewards of the Virginia Piedmont, a unique and special place enriched with cultural significance of sweeping historical importance. We invite you and your families to share these pastoral meadows, primordial forests, and gentle slopes lined with lush vineyards that we have called home for generations. Virginians have long identified themselves with the vine, have recognized its importance, and have consistently promoted a viable wine industry. As Virginians, grape and wine production is part of our collective cultural identity and heritage dating back as early as 1619 with the adoption of the Twelfth Act of the Original Acts of the Virginia General Assembly that required every landowner to plant and maintain ten vines. Today, what was once a dream of a few Founding Fathers has now become a reality for all to share and enjoy. Wine in moderation is an integral part of our family's heritage. At Philip Carter, our history is wine, and our future is to promote the gracious way of life through wine, art and culture. Philip Carter Winery offers the absolute perfect way for each and every person to enjoy the unique terroir and breathtaking beauty of Fauquier County. From a romantic walk through the Philip Carter vineyards to an elegant winemaker's dinner in our grand Cleve Hall or the perfect personalized, private group tasting in our King Carter suite overlooking the vineyards, our incredible family winery is sure to satisfy!

The tastings are generous and on the whole the servers know their wines. I have found their enthusiasm for the product to vary from almost indifference to genuine enjoyment. The wines are good and even when crowded this is a fun place!

Our server was very friendly and we were able to immediately do our tasting upon arrival. The tasting is $8 for three whites, one rose and four red wines plus a dessert wine.

Our favorite overall was the 2014 Governor Fauquier. We purchased a couple bottles and went outside to enjoy a glass with our picnic lunch. They have numerous tables with umbrellas set up between the building and the vines, along with some corn hole games.

No dogs allowed in the building, so our teens stayed outside with them.

They offer special event evenings with music, including one with peach sangria coming up that looks like fun...

The panorama is lovely!

First, the wines are excellent. The quality of the wines is superior to that of many other wineries in the region. Our two favorites are Philip Carter Winery and Delaplane Winery. The setting at Philip Carter is beautiful. It is a perfect place to bring a lunch, enjoy a bottle of great wine, and listen to great music. The music schedule is typically posted on their website. The staff are very polite, friendly, and informative. The facility tours are a lot of fun. It is very family friendly, so bring your kids. We have been members of the Philip Carter wine club for several years and always enjoy our selections. The club member discounts are very generous.

We originally drove out to Philip Carter because I bought a coupon for two tastings. We really enjoyed the tasting and found the person who led it to be knowledgeable and very personable. We bought a couple of bottles and went outside to relax and listen to the weekend entertainment. Wow. Don Chapman was superb. We have since returned a few times and have had similar experiences.

I highly recommend it!

We did the organized tour and tasting and found it to be very enjoyable. The tour guide/sommelier was very knowledgeable and made things entertaining. We liked the wine enough to buy several bottles and might join their wine club when we are back in the area.
