I recently purchased a Groupon to visit the Philip Carter Winery ALL the way out in Hume, VA. At first I was hesitant as it is about an hour drive (with little to no traffic) from Ballston, VA, but the trip was well worth it. The winery is about 1-2 miles from the main road and very quaint. We pulled up and were greeted by the music of a duo that was singing and playing music on the patio of the winery. We gathered that this was a normal Sunday occurrence, which was wonderful! We then got to take a guided tour of a portion of the winery and got to the good stuff....the WINE TASTING. We were offered about 11-12 wines, from white to reds and finished with a port type of wine, which was amazing. After the wine tasting we were given a picnic basket, complete with all the makings of a great picnic (picnic blanket, cutting board, crackers, salted meat and cheese and yes, of course...more wine). The winery wasn't over crowded and was a very intimate experience. I highly recommend taking a trip over. We were also informed that on some evenings they do food and wine pairing, which would be an event I will be sure to attend!
Note: It takes several weeks to get a reservation as it seems the winery is very popular and the group size being relatively small (around 12 people)- so be sure to book ahead well in advance to avoid being disappointed!
