“great place to stay”
Reviewed 26 September 2013

rooms are great, nice and big, beds are comfy and the pool is outstanding and so is the restaurant. breakfast offers a wide range of hot or cold food and the evening meals are good.
parking is just outside and the entertainment is good. could do with getting wi fi in the rooms.
we will be back there asap

Room Tip: level two overlooking the pool is just perfect

I returned yesterday after a great break in Portugal. As has already been said could not fault the hotel and used the free shuttle daily. There are beautiful beaches within walking distance Sao Rafeal is within 15 mins and gorgeous. We paid 8 euros for a taxi back from old town . There are also a couple of nice restaurants within walking distance Dom dimi and the superb prai grande also a sports amily bar that has free sunbeds and use of pool nearby for your football fix called scoobys

We just got back to Belgium after 1 week of holiday in Baia Grande. I agree with the review of the London people, nice and quiet hotel but you need a car or taxi to go to the nearest town. The shuttle is not enough along, What we were missing was day time entertainment. Maybe there is entertainment during the months july and august but during our stay there was nothing.( stayed from 10-17th of september). The housekeeping is very good, very clean room,The receptionists were very friendly, the food was less varied. Sometimes there was upon entering the restaurant no place according to the Department, according to them, wait 15 min and then came Carlos emerge (main F&B), not always friendly but very skilled what organisation, so in an instant yet a table. With thanks to Carlos. Choose a room with views of the pool, then you have a bigger terrace..

Dear Client
Thank you very much for your positive review about Baia Grande.
In days of higher occupancy the restaurant must be well managed at breakfast but we have Carlos and Luciano to do that. Our clients are in capable hands. Sometimes it takes a few more minutes but everything is handled with efficiency.
I understand your comments about the localization of the hotel. As I wrote previously in this forum I advise all travelers that want to visit us to check the localization of the hotel before you make your booking. We do not want misinform our clients on this, or any other, issue.

We are 2 mid 30 year old women who stayed at the lovely Baia Grande Hotel (mid september 2013) and wanted to write a quick review as there are some details missing from a lot of the reviews below.

Before coming to Portugal we researched many many hotels in this area. We were looking for a relaxing hotel but one close to the beaches and bars. The reviews sounded great for the Baia Grande so we booked. No complaints about the hotel, BUT it is too far out from anywhere.

Hotel
This hotel is very relaxing! The staff are very friendly and helpful. There were ample of beds available and the pool is very large. The rooms were cleaned every day and fresh towels.
There is free wifi but only in the hotel lobby/bar area
This is a lovely hotel and would definitely recommend it as somewhere to stay if you have a car or willing to pay for taxi's.

Taxi
This hotel is too far out if you want to go anywhere and we spent most of our money on taxi's.
€50 each way from the airport to hotel
€10 each way to the old town
€12 each way to the strip
€7 each way to the nearest beach. There is a shuttle bus but the timings didn't suit us as the last bus back to the hotel is 5pm which was too early

Nightlife
The strip is exactly what you expect it be so depends on what type of night out you are looking for. The food is tasteless in the restaurants so you may want to eat somewhere else before you venture into the strip. The drinks are cheaper than the old town but again, it depends what type of night you are looking for!
For us we loved The old town, from live music at several bars to normal bars with DJs. If you go to the old town, you must go to the best bar along the little strip called Piccadilly! Joao the owner and his staff are friendly, and do the best cocktails! The food in the old town is amazing and we tried several of their restaurants. There are many stalls and little shops for you to look around also.

So overall this hotel is clean, friendly and very spacious BUT it is too far out from anywhere.

Room Tip: Would recommend a pool view

We have just returned from a week's stay at Baia Grande. The hotel is located in a quiet area, with isolated properties nearby. Our room (overlooking the grounds) with an added child's bed was both comfortable and clean.
Breakfast (Mermaid restaurant) was the standard Continental/English: cereals, fry up, fruits option. Dinner buffet €22 was not extensive. There was an equal split of hot options as of salad options, with a token selection of desserts. The pool bar offered a good selection of quick bites and was reasonably priced. Alternative eating can be found at restaurants 5 mins walk away, Marina or in Albufeira town (restaurants in abundance).
We spent a lot of time in the pool (0.4m-1.7m). It is a bit on the cold side, that said your body learns to acclimatise with it! The pool was never crowded and no problem finding a sun lounger. Towels provided on a 'pay a deposit, refund on return basis'.
The hotel shuttle runs 4 times daily to the town (last one at 18:55hrs) and 3 times to Praia Gale. You'll need to book your seats in advance. Taxi from town €8 approx and airport-hotel return €60 approx. The Marina 5 mins away by shuttle offered boat excursions (coastline/caves). The evening entertainment, tv and WIFI were rather limited, if you're looking for more action then head for the town!
We found most of the frontline staff to be professional and helpful.
We enjoyed our stay at the Baia Grande and would class this hotel as 4 stars with room for improvement!

Been back from the Baia Grande just 2 days and we had a very relaxing holiday. The hotel is very nice, clean, modern and our room was very spacious although it overlooked the car park and had a very small terrace.
There isn't much outside the hotel, about 5 mins down the road is a mini supermarket and down another road about a 10 min walk is a restaurant, we did find a little secluded beach called Rabbit Beach but again it's a good 20 min walk and that's about it. There is a shuttle bus which will take you to the beach or into town at certain times of the day which has to be booked in advance at reception however there isn't a bus after 7pm so it's a taxi at a cost of 7 - 8 euros each way. The pool area was great and there were plenty of spare sunbeds throughout the day as there never seemed to be many people around, at most there would be about 16 people in the pool at one time, it wasn't noisy either as there weren't many young children at the hotel. For me, there wasn't a big choice on food, breakfast was the usual, bacon, sausage etc. the juice was very concentrated so we had to water it down and the bread was very sweet tasting - our son wasn't too keen on the breakfast and didn't bother to go down for it on 3 occasions - not the best I've had. The evening meal only had 4 main courses to choose from -there would be fish, a meat course, meatballs and a pasta course, then to accompany them there would be rice, spaghetti, cauliflower and some sort of potato - not once were chips served in the restaurant, which for me was a disaster as I don't eat any veg or any other type of potato - however I do realise not everyone wants chips - in other hotels I've stayed in you had a far bigger selection to choose from, hope you like salad as there was plenty of it - bowls of lettuce, carrot, onion and coleslaw then there were big platters of other mixed salad dishes. Food at the pool bar was good, we ate there every lunchtime and yes, they served great chips!!!
A great hotel for a quite, relaxing holiday, no real complaints.

Just spent a week at the Baia Grande in Albufeira this August, the staff were very helpful and the food excellent (we went full board) and would recommend this hotel to anyone. Good for families and older couples. Bar prices were reasonable. Met quite a few people who came back year after year, and we would certainly come back again sometime in the future.

Room Tip: Choose pool/sea view
