“Blissful week”
Reviewed 23 July 2014

I travelled to the Inn with 7 year old son and 10 year old nephew after dropping off my teenage son at a fishing camp nearby. I cannot say enough good things about the staff, the grounds, the scenery, the surrounding area and the activities. We spent a week biking, swimming, kayaking and relaxing.

One of the highlights was a chartered boat/fishing ride with Captain Gene Edmonds. He tailored the day to our needs and the boys and I enjoyed our time on the boat immensely.

It seems that this area is a hidden gem and I hope it stays that way, which is why I was hesitant to write this review!

The river has been calling me for awhile and the Tides is the best place to enjoy all the area has to offer. We just spent 4 days at the Tides and left feeling relaxed and refreshed.

Our room was in the main building, facing the parking lot. We were barely in the room so that wasn't an issue for us. The room was spacious, well appointed, and central to all points of the property. The bathroom was large with plush towels, and there were ample hangers in the closet. The water pressure is great and they have obviously invested in a water softening system. No smelly, hard river water here!

We spent time on the beach and out in the water, taking advantage of the paddle boards and kayaks. My husband even tried his hand at crabbing! We loved having access to the beach bikes! We rode to the coffee shop, the winery, dinner and Christ Church. Our car only moved twice during our stay. Even on the weekend, it never felt like the resort was over crowded.

We had a few meals on property and were surprised by the quality of each meal. The prices are what you would expect at a resort, but the portions and quality exceeded our expectations. Try the blue crab quesadilla, it's all crab! As are the crabcakes. The mac and cheese appetizer was also a favorite.

If you are looking to stay here, please keep one thing in mind. This is somewhere to go to turn off the world for awhile. There are no stop lights, no big chain stores, just a laid back small town with a gorgeous view! There are parts of the Tides that could use a little love, but in a way it's part of the charm. My husband was a bit put off when we first pulled in, but quickly became enchanted once we were inside and certainly while we were on the beach!

Thank you for your review.
Delighted that you have found a home away from home. I think you captured the essence of the Tides, tranquility, lots to do, great food, relaxation.
Of course a resort such as the Tides never finishes its refurbishment, when you finish at one end it is time to start again at the other!
We look forward to welcoming you back.

Just got back from a restful and fun 2 night stay (July 18 & 19). We soaked in the river by the beach, hit the pool, hung out with the boaters at the Marina, and ate our way thru each, great meal. We loved out room, in the main building, plenty of space, bathroom was huge, very comfortable place to stay. All of our meals were superb! The service was excellent and friendly, from the valet, front desk, waiters, everybody. Well trained and enthusiastic staff; happy folks. There is plenty to do, great water sports, golf, tours of the surrounding area, etc. We will definitely be back; because of its smaller size, I prefer it over someplace like the Greenbrier Resort.

Room Tip: We prefer the main building, but there is not a bad place there.

We had not been to the Tides Inn in about 2 years(since the renovation)! We were all pleasantly surprised by the upgrades to the property specifically the rooms!! They are very nicely appointed and the bathrooms are extremely nice!!

The grounds are well manicured and the facilities equally cared for! Service is definitely important to the staff as identified by their willingness to help and go out of their way to assist!

Definitely consider The Tides Inn for a quiet get away!

What a place to relax! This place, far away from the hustle and bustle, secluded and on the shore of the tranquil mouth of Carter Cove off the Tappahannock River. My wife and I enjoyed the leisurely amenities and environs. We experienced both sunshine and rainfall, but there was something to not do for both weather situations. From boating and fishing, to lounging on the beach or pool, to drinking and dining, it was one of the most enjoyable weekends we've experienced in Virginia. Strolling through their huge property, experiencing man-made comforts and natural preserved nature, incredible landscaping - birds, trees, flowers, lawns, the giant chess game, bicycles, outdoor patio with fire pit, they even have a sandy beach area, and almost forgot their golf course! ...the attention to detail, service and quality by the staff, made it even more accommodating and pleasurable. We dined well thanks to their excellent Chef, enjoyed great selections of local wines, mixed drinks were fantastic by their Ace bartender, rooms are great - especially the huge picture windows facing the cove and shoreline with its tranquil picturesque waters and marina - and the beds were actually comfortable and relaxing. We're planning on going back!

Room Tip: Get a room with a view to the water, you won't regret it!

My wife and two adult children were at The Tides Inn from Friday June 27 and checked-out Monday June 30. My wife and I spent our honeymoom here in 1984 and have been back a number of times most recently in March of this year. But this was the first time for our children. It was a very good experience. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The location is fantastic and there are lots of things to do at the Inn as well as in the area. My wife and son are dedicated golfers and played eighteen holes at the Golden Eagle, the Inn's golf course. They both agree it is one of the best courses they have ever played, the course is in excellent shape and challenging without being impossible. The water hazards are beautiful. We ate dinner at the Inn Friday night and it was good but not as good as you can get at a more reasonable price at several nearby restaurants. The grounds and main building were in good shape but there are some noticeable deferred maintenance issues in some of the outbuildings that need to be addressed such as mustiness in some of the rooms ( should clear-up after the first night with the air conditioner and fan on) and sprouts and leaves growing out of some of the gutters (Windsor House). If you have never been to the Tides Inn you need to do so, it is a very special place and you will have a good time, if you have been to The Tides Inn you need to return soon and reenjoy that special feeling.

Room Tip: Ask for a full view of Carter's Creek...

Thank you for your comments. The Golden Eagle golf course is in excellent shape this year and the grass is spectacular. Having a Golf Course Superintendent who loves the area and knows the vagaries of the weather he is well placed to adjust fertilizer and watering according to the courses needs, It also helps to have temperatures in the upper 80's than upper 90's this year just blissful weather.

We recently had a very relaxing and enjoyable stay at the Tides for two nights. The grounds are lovely and well maintained and the view of the water from the hotel is beautiful. The room was clean and comfortable (my husband and I are very picky about beds and will not return to hotels with overly soft mattresses). The pool has plenty of shaded areas and numerous umbrellas, which we appreciated. The spa was nice and the property has four extremely nice tennis courts. We arranged for lessons with the tennis pro (Debra), who was amazing. We did not bring our kids but there seem to be many activities on the grounds (croquet, baci ball, lawn chess, crabbing), especially for kids in the 5+ category. We biked the short distance to the Dog and Oyster vineyard for wine/oyster tastings, and had a fabulous gourmet dinner one night at a restaurant in the charming, historic building of the Hope and Glory Inn -- also within walking distance. The restaurant at the Tides Inn was also extremely good and offers a pleasing view of the marina area. The restaurant offers delicious gluten free dinner rolls available and the dinner menu clearly indicates which items are gluten free. The staff were all helpful and courteous.

I am delighted you had such a good stay. I note your comment on Gluten Free which more and more of our guests are enquiring about.
Our restaurant menu now has a GF note alongside every dish which is Gluten Free, we will be interested to hear feedback on this from our guests.
