Owner description: Keswick Vineyards is a family owned and operated winery situated on the historic Edgewood Estate. Owners Al and Cindy Schornberg chose this land to produce their award winning wines because of its unique terroir and beautiful scenery. Winemaker Stephen Barnard's philosophy is to focus on quality instead of quantity and produce the best wines possible. He has garnered numerous awards for Keswick's wines including the Virginia Governor's Cup for the 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon and Best of Class for the 2008 Viognier. Other varietals produced include Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, Norton, Petite Verdot, Syrah, Touriga, and Verdejo. The tasting room is relaxing and inviting and is open daily for tastings from 9-5 excluding major holidays. During the summer, the tasting room will stay open until 6pm on Fridays and Saturdays.

We were in the area for the Marine Corps Historic Half Marathon and took the afternoon to visit wineries. We stopped here because our daughter and son in law tried and enjoyed a bottle of their wine recently. It was the best stop on our tour by far! The scenery was spectacular- as was the opportunity to lunch outside with crackers and cheese and a glass of their wine. The staff took their time to explain each wine, many of which we had not sampled before (whatever you do, try both the Norton Reserve wine and the chocolate- if you are a chocoholic, you will not be sorry). This was the best and most detailed wine tasting we've had in VA. It will take a bit of work to find, but it was worth the time.

Our experience at Keswick was totally different from the last two reviewers and was the best of the six wineries that we visited in the area. We had personal attention from a gracious and very knowledgeable hostess who poured generous samples of all their wines and discussed each of them with us. The winemaker even came out and offered us a sample of a new wine that he was just bottling. The wines themselves were uniformly high quality and included some varieties that are not found elsewhere or not as well done: Chambourcin and Norton. We bought several wines and , had the budget permitted, would have bought more. There is a lot here for the serious and knowledgeable wine drinker.

Keswick Vineyards was our first stop on a recent wine tasting weekend. The tasting fee of $5 bought us sips (and I do mean sips) of eight wines. The samples provided at Keswick were, by far, the smallest I've had at any Virginia winery. All of the wines were quite drinkable, but none really stood out. The winery is quite proud of its Consensus red blend and the process by which it is made. (Keswick's wine club invites teams comprised of its members to the winery once a year for a contest where each team submits a blend of Keswick's reds to a blind tasting. The winning blend is used for the next Consensus bottling.) Our server was very friendly, but lacked a knowledge of the winery or wine industry that would allow her to answer more than basic questions. At the end of the tasting, we didn't feel compelled to buy anything and moved along to our next stop.

Nice idyllic setting - a kind lady served us at the tasting room. She talked knowledgeably about the history of the vineyard. BUT, she did not wipe the counter or remove the trash from previous customers, forgot to serve us crackers, and when we asked, gave us the previous customers' leftovers, she actually pulled out a dirty napkin from the trash to wipe up a spill and crumbled cookie fell out onto the counter. She was supposed to give us 8 wines to taste, but forgot 2. We reminded her that we had not tasted the entire list. The glasses for tasting are all stacked up neatly above the counter but they have dust on them. You can guess that we did not make a purchase. While visiting other wineries, the purchases were in sturdy boxes - Keswick puts the bottles in plastic bags - good luck making it home in 1 piece. Wines are twice the price of a good Spanish wine and not nearly as good. Not going back.
