“Appalled”

Lee Chapel and Museum
Ranked #2 of 29 things to do in Lexington
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 9 July 2014

I was absolutely appalled going into the chapel. There were "guides" there speaking loudly in a house of worship. I was not able to approach the statue out of sheer aggravation for their lack of respect. Once going below, I was even more upset in seeing that there were guides talking LOUDER next to the crypt.

This is one of America's most beloved military officers. His resting place should be treated with respect and reverence. When I visited Washington's tomb, you stood in a single line, quietly and were only allowed to approach the general one or two at a time, remaining silent.

General Lee should be handled the same way.

We attended a wedding here and it was beautiful. There is no center aisle, which is different, but it was such a quaint church for a couple that met on the campus of W&L.

Lee Chapel is must see for the R.E. Lee fan. His office is restored and the memorial in the chapel above his family tomb is incredible. the whole town of historic Lexington is something to see. We didn't go in but walked by the Stonewall Jackson home and walked the streets of the historic area. Everything in the historic area is within a few blocks of each other. The Stonewall Jackson cemetery is very interesting with a large monument in the center where Jackson and his family were laid you rest, the cemetery is very old and has many tombstones dating from the mid- late 1800's.We had lunch in a small café called Niko's that was very good and reasonably priced.

You only need an hour or so to stop and visit the chapel and the attached museum but this is an hour very well spent.

You get a wonderful view of the architecture of Washington and Lee University as you take the very short walk from the lower parking lot up to the chapel. Regular tours of the chapel are informative and take you right up to the magnificant sculpture of Lee 'sleeping' above the crypt where he and his family lay at rest.

The Museum is also excellent - nicely laid out with just enough information to keep you interested in each section.

Very well done.................and free!

Lee was a great man and a truly classic gentleman in the best sense. We have been here several times. The statue of Lee in the chapel is beautiful. His great horse Traveler is buried just outside of where the Lee family is interred.
