“Meander is Mediocre”
Reviewed 19 October 2013

My husband and I recently stayed at the Meander as we were trying to combine business with pleasure. The Inn is a gracious, old property which depicts it's historical past. Beautiful white columns and sweeping verandas. First impressions are everything for me so the minute we walked into the main foyer I was slightly disappointed. The front room had a cluttered piano to the left and a white couch against the wall with a large stain on the front. Also, a period fireplace was in the room but was not lit to help the ambience. We wove our way through the dining area to be shown to our room which was The Colonel Fry room. It has green walls, green drapes, green chairs, green bed coverlets. Does not look like the photo online. The bathroom is dated, large and clean and has a broken bidet with a sign on it. Breakfast seating is promptly at 9:00. For the first course we each got one small bran muffin. 15 minutes later a small, warm smoothie shot with four small pieces of fruit on a toothpick like skewer. 15 minutes later ( you will have a selection of two choices) mine was some type of sausage which was over cooked and a cold quiche accompanied by 2-3 ounces of grits. This entire process was roughly an hour. Needless to say if you are anxious to get out and explore the country, skip breakfast. Our business schedule did not allow us to make any dinners therefore I cannot do a review. Oh, did I mention the barking dog in the room next to ours? Remember, this is a pet friendly inn so if you are allergic to pets or not hearing impaired this will pose a problem for you. The Inn is beautiful but needs attention. Obviously the owners are doing just enough to get by. Please remember you are obligated to purchase a dinner at the Inn during hour stay. Upon leaving, my husband politely voiced his thoughts to Suzanne about the mandatory dinner clause. As with all good business owners who love repeat customers, her response was, if people don't like it they can stay somewhere else.

We spend a wonderful fall family weekend enjoying the Inn and the beautiful countryside of Virginia, not to mention the vineyards and their settings up the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The Inn itself in unforgettable--a beautiful location, lots of land, and a lovely old house, which manages to be cozy and still cling to its history. The food was remarkable--three course breakfasts and dinners that attract not only the inn's guests but also diners from the area--an area, by the way, where exceptional food is the norm, and not the exception. The owners were so welcoming, so accessible, and so eager to make sure that we had a wonderful time--and we did! We look forward to our next trip to the Inn--and maybe we'll take our golden retriever, since the Inn welcomes well-behaved furry guests! The Fishers

My husband and I stayed in the Madison cottage for our 21st anniversary. Everyone was so wonderful. They put great attention to detail. Their goal is to make your stay with them memorable. I would definitely recommend the package that includes the dinner basket, wine and cheese, and lots of other goodies... Restaurant is only opened for dinner Thursday thru Saturday.. Sorry we missed that because our dinner basket was out of this world good!! The property is beautiful to explore with a nice glass of wine. Got to meet the innkeepers.. Great people. Their golden retriever Callie is a sweetheart too. Can't wait to go back again! Thank you to everyone for making our stay so awsome!

From the moment you drive up to the plantation you feel like you stepped back in time. The rooms are very quaint and comfortable. The owners made us feel so welcome and they were very accommodating. The dinner and breakfasts were from local farms and incredible. There are many places to sit and relax, the living room, the back porch the lawn. We stayed in one of the dependencies and it was a treat, I kept imagining previous times there & if only the walls could talk. It is close in proximity to wineries and several other sites in the area. It is a must visit for history buffs or a relaxing get away.

What a great place to unwind and enjoy the beautiful VA countryside. My husband and I went, along with our two pooches, and had a fabulous time at the Inn. We had a private and very comfortable cottage, found the owners and staff to be incredibly nice and helpful, and on top of that, we had outstanding breakfasts and dinners! What's not to love?

Room Tip: We stayed in the Groom's Cottage. It's very charming; the only thing that kept us from ratin...

Very good historic inn on gorgeous grounds near Culpepper VA. Very nice breakfasts, including treats for our dog. Staff is personable and knowledgable of both the inn and the surrounding area. Be sure to dine at the inn's dining room during your stay as their dinners are excellent with a local wine pairing.
Also, be sure to enjoy the walking path around the property!

Room Tip: Call ahead for dog friendly rooms.

We stayed in the Lightfoot Room and the patio outside our room was worth the trip. We recently stayed at the inn as we visited the Montpelier Museum and the location was excellent. We relaxed as we overlooked a beautifully kept garden and enjoyed watching humming birds feed with occasional visits from a woodpecker. The innkeepers are very warm and accommodating and it was a pleasure talking to them. But by far the three course gourmet breakfast is worth every cent you spend!

Room Tip: Loved the Lightfoot Room with outside patio.
