Reviewed 16 February 2014

My boyfriend and I came here for Valentine's weekend. With traffic and the snow, it was a long and frustrating ride out of the city. We arrived very late on Friday evening but were nevertheless greeted at the entryway by the owner, Doc, who showed us straight up to our room. There's something to be said about not having to fuss with checking in after a long day.
We stayed in the Terrill Room. Just a heads-up, it has been redecorated since the pictures were taken for the web site and it is now very purple. Being a young couple, we enjoyed and embraced the makeover but I imagine the new look might not be for everyone.
The tub and fire place were relished, but the bed was the best part about the room. It was the most comfortable bed I think I've ever slept in.
At Prospect Hill, it was all in the details. They brought us breakfast in bed for no additional cost, placed cookies in the room during turn down, and when a Doc noticed we were using the fire place, he prepared extra wood and newspaper for burning. It was the perfect getaway from the busy city at an excellent price, and we're already planning our return.

We LOVE this Bed and Breakfast. The new owners live on the premises and are warm and hospitable. The attention to detail and charming touches make this the perfect location for a quiet weekend getaway. We spent the day in Charlottesville and came back to the Dinner Basket and enjoyed an absolutely delicious dinner in our room by the fire. Can't wait to return!

We checked into Prospect Hill on Saturday night, and despite arriving late we were greeted warmly by Doc (the owner & gracious host). The original decor which apparently 'turns some people off' (based on other reviews I have read), was charming and unique in our opinion. It's refreshing to find a business that holds true to it's historical roots yet still provides comfortable furnishings that are warm and welcoming. We enjoyed breakfast in the formal dining room both mornings, and were impressed by their variety and quality of food served (from homemade apple cider donuts to the grits, everything was impressive and delicious). The grounds are stunning and make for a beautiful setting to stroll through. All in all we were VERY happy with our stay and if ever in Virginia again we will make it a point to stay at Prospect Hill.

My husband and I had planned this weekend away for several months. We don't get away too often, this was a special weekend to celebrate my upcoming 50th birthday. When we arrived, I had to wander through the house to find someone to help us. Our room, the Summer Kitchen was cute but they would really benefit by decorating in colonial style and updating the 80's era window treatments and bathroom. We had to squat in the bathroom to fit under the shower head. We tried to light a fire in our fireplace which was the focal point of the Room and the wood was so wet it wouldn't burn.
I had ordered a special dietary breakfast that I contacted the inn about before our stay. They completely forgot about it. Our eggs were lukewarm and the breakfast menu was boring at best. The grounds are really beautiful but the Inn itself needs quite a bit of updating and work. We had to leave early the day of departure but were not asked about it beforehand. Since breakfast is included in the price of the stay, it would have been nice had something to take with us. For 300 dollars a night, there are definite improvements to be made.

It is a toss up as to what is the best. It's either the service or the food. They don't have a huge staff, but the owner is one of the nicest people on the planet. He tells stories, he's accomodating, and he really cares. You leave this place feeling like you made a friend. This leads me to the food. The food they serve is top notch. If you stay here it would be a mistake to not have dinner here. The food is fantastic, the atmosphere is wonderful, and it really is a lot of fun. My smoking hot girlfriend and I even talked about if we ever go the Charlottesville again, and even if we aren't staying, we'd want to have dinner at this place.

The property is fantastic too. If you are just trying to chill out, the grounds are very attractive and just nice to walk on. It is very scenic and pretty.

The cottage we rented was also very quaint and attractive. The bathroom was bizarre though. I liked that they had air conditioning, but the wall unit was loud, and annoying. The room also seemed kind of damp. Of course it's in Southern Virginia, where it's damp. A dehumidifier or better air conditioning would make a difference. That's really the only thing for me preventing it from being a 5 star.

For the price we were expecting a fantastic meal. We weren't disappointed. We were seated at a table with another couple, and would have preferred a single table as we were celebrating our anniversary.
Food and service was excellent and worth a return visit.
The facility is beautiful and if we were from out of town, we would definitely stay here.

I can see revisiting Prospect Hill in the future and giving it 5 Stars. It has all the charm to take it there and I'm confident that the relatively new owners will continue to improve as time goes on. Service varied, Doc gives it 100%; however, when we arrived, we were met by another staff member who did little more than point out our cabin. We had no idea whether the Manor House was available to us for anything other than dinner. Speaking of dinner, it was OK. A great soup was followed by some salad greens that were over dressed and the main course was duck that was lost in a sauce. Desert was a VERY lemony tart. I think if the owners play off the colonial theme and have their chef make staples from the colonial days it will be a nice touch. Breakfast was hit and miss. The first day was pancakes and sausage (miss), the second day a tasty egg and spinach soufflé (a big hit). Breakfast in our cabin was a treat for sure!!! Perhaps offering a sparkling wine split for those that want to start the day with a mimosa would be a nice touch. The rooms were great. Definitely looked like you stepped back in time, yet we'll maintained. We stayed in the Summer Kitchen cabin - perhaps an upgrade to wooden blinds and shedding the dusty valances and kitschy knick-knacks would have kicked it up a notch. Being able to connect my iPhone to the clock was a great feature! Sometimes nature and a lack of TV can be too quiet. We found that the cabins don't lock. Doc assured us of the safety of our belongings and offered the use of a safe for valuables but I think that you just really need locks on guest rooms no matter what. All-in-all, it's a great escape just off the Monticello wine trail.
