Owner description: The Old City Cemetery, established in 1806, is one of the oldest public cemeteries in the United States still in use today. Mayors and other prominent civic leaders, along with the city's indigent and "strangers," are among the estimated 18,000 people buried here. Two thirds of those interred here are of African descent, both enslaved and free. The cemetery's Confederate section contains the graves of more than 2,200 soldiers from 14 states. Museums on the property interpret the diverse history of this rehabilitated graveyard and its inhabitants. Today, Old City Cemetery is the most visited historic site in the City of Lynchburg and is Central Virginia's most unique public garden. It is a Virginia Historic Landmark on the National Register of Historic Places.

I'll be honest, I was not sure about what to expect when my family wanted me to go with them to the Old City Cemetery one day. Turns out, I actually enjoyed the visit a lot more than I thought I would! It's very interesting to learn about a piece of Lynchburg history that not everyone thinks about. The historic buildings, railroad history, and small museum give visitors a unique glimpse into Lynchburg's past. Definitely recommended for those who love history.

This is worth visiting if you like history. There are old historical buildings , fantastic plants and trees...many of them are labeled. When we visited it was decorated with pumpkins. There is also a confederate cemetary. For a person from a northern state, it was quite interesting.

I wouldn't normally think of visiting a cemetery, but visiting Old City Cemetery changed my perspective! They offer rose garden tours, ghost tours, a wedding chapel, candlelight tours, holiday open house, museums, and acres and acres of grounds to walk and learn stories of the people buried here. It's a "must see" when visiting Lynchburg!
