We had an absolutely delightful stay at Mountainside Villas. This was the second, of what I hope to be an annual, ski trip that my sister, some close friends, and I take. I’m a JMU alum and I love having the opportunity to return to the Burg’, visit campus, and spend some time enjoying the warm hospitality and great outdoors of the Shenandoah Valley. Last year we stayed in the Woodstone section of Masanutten so I will detail my experience in comparison to there.
We arrived around 5:00pm after having lunch and spending some time and money on the JMU campus. We checked-in after having stopped at Wal-Mart for essentials and Mr. Jay’s for Saturday breakfast in order to take advantage of the full amenities of the unit.
Mountainside Villas is tucked deep inside Massanutten beyond the security gate. Felt VERY safe by the way though I’m not really a scary type. It’s on the opposite side as Woodstone but it’s the more central and conveniently located side IMHO. From our villas we were 2 minutes (driving) from Le Club which was free for us (Arcade, Food, Vending, Pools, Basketball Courts, Movies, Hot-tubs, Complimentary Towel Service, etc.).We were less than 3 minutes from the main Ski, Ziplining, and Snowtubing areas which was again very easy. There were two assigned parking spots in front the unit and additional free parking at the Welcome-center a minute down the road. There was free w-fi but it was slow, my iPhone LTE service was quicker, and I have Sprint so that’s saying a lot lol, so I ended up just using that. But at least Wi-Fi was there and they are upfront that it’s not the best for streaming Netflix, Pandora, etc.
We stayed in Unit 46 on Demeret Drive, which was an end-unit, and it was gorgeous with lush natural landscaping. I must say I was worried about reviews calling the unit’s “dated.” I guess they were slightly less modern than Woodstone (but at half the price who cares?) to us that added to the appeal. It felt more as if you were at your, “unique mountain home” versus a small commercial apartment with people above or below you. Everything was very well maintained; there was 2 levels, (2 bedrooms with a queen and king sized bed in them each respectively, a loft with 2 twin beds, and a full bathroom) upstairs plenty of square footage. Downstairs there was a full-sized pull out sleeper sofa in the living room and full bathroom with a Jacuzzi tub and steam sauna in it. The dining room was spacious and sat 8 people with chairs for all which was nice. There is an expansive bar and the kitchen was fully equipped with all the accoutrements you need to prepare meals from measuring spoons and cups, can openers, wine bottle openers, pots, pans, utensils, plates, etc I was really impressed it was like they thought of everything. We prepared 3 extensive meals and didn’t feel as though anything was missing from the kitchen. Just bring your seasonings and ziplock bags lol. There was also a patio or deck on each level. They looked out over the golf course and had sliding glass doors with working screens and locks. All the beds were comfortable though the twins in the loft were a tad firm to our tastes. We loved the flatscreen wall-mounted TV in the living room and the electric fireplace was low maintenance and AMAZING adding a nice ambiance and even put out some heat lol. Lots of stairs in the unit which are carpeted and we were all young so loved them. Stairs to get down to front door of unit also. Maybe not the most handicap friendly though I’m sure they have some units which are more so.
We followed the rules to a “T” despite being a rather large group of relatively young fun-loving professionals and had no qualms with the checkout process though it was too early 10am. 11am would be preferable. Upside was no wait for brunch in Harrisonburg on our way back home. Having to leave the towels and sheets by the doors was weird but no biggie. We only stayed a weekend and tidied up the unit before checking out (just how I was raised.) There was no maid service which again despite us being 8-9 people we didn’t miss for a weekend. There were plenty of pillows, towels and linens for everyone including the sofa bed etc. Overall we had a fantastic time at the resort. We saved so much by staying here compared to a newer unit. When you add in all the money we saved cooking meals instead of eating out this was the nicest and most budget friendly trip I’ve taken in a while! I found activities (Ziplining, Skiing (night), and Snowtubing) to be reasonably priced compared to other places. I’ll definitely be back here next year. Also we weren’t timeshare customers and weren’t bothered at all with any of that and we still had a nice unit to us lol. Lots of wildlife roaming around (groundhogs and deer.) Very dark winding road up the mountain but it’s well maintained. Just put the address in your GPS and follow carefully if you’re coming at night.
