“Great mountain escape from the city.”
Reviewed 24 February 2014

We had an absolutely delightful stay at Mountainside Villas. This was the second, of what I hope to be an annual, ski trip that my sister, some close friends, and I take. I’m a JMU alum and I love having the opportunity to return to the Burg’, visit campus, and spend some time enjoying the warm hospitality and great outdoors of the Shenandoah Valley. Last year we stayed in the Woodstone section of Masanutten so I will detail my experience in comparison to there.
We arrived around 5:00pm after having lunch and spending some time and money on the JMU campus. We checked-in after having stopped at Wal-Mart for essentials and Mr. Jay’s for Saturday breakfast in order to take advantage of the full amenities of the unit.
Mountainside Villas is tucked deep inside Massanutten beyond the security gate. Felt VERY safe by the way though I’m not really a scary type. It’s on the opposite side as Woodstone but it’s the more central and conveniently located side IMHO. From our villas we were 2 minutes (driving) from Le Club which was free for us (Arcade, Food, Vending, Pools, Basketball Courts, Movies, Hot-tubs, Complimentary Towel Service, etc.).We were less than 3 minutes from the main Ski, Ziplining, and Snowtubing areas which was again very easy. There were two assigned parking spots in front the unit and additional free parking at the Welcome-center a minute down the road. There was free w-fi but it was slow, my iPhone LTE service was quicker, and I have Sprint so that’s saying a lot lol, so I ended up just using that. But at least Wi-Fi was there and they are upfront that it’s not the best for streaming Netflix, Pandora, etc.
We stayed in Unit 46 on Demeret Drive, which was an end-unit, and it was gorgeous with lush natural landscaping. I must say I was worried about reviews calling the unit’s “dated.” I guess they were slightly less modern than Woodstone (but at half the price who cares?) to us that added to the appeal. It felt more as if you were at your, “unique mountain home” versus a small commercial apartment with people above or below you. Everything was very well maintained; there was 2 levels, (2 bedrooms with a queen and king sized bed in them each respectively, a loft with 2 twin beds, and a full bathroom) upstairs plenty of square footage. Downstairs there was a full-sized pull out sleeper sofa in the living room and full bathroom with a Jacuzzi tub and steam sauna in it. The dining room was spacious and sat 8 people with chairs for all which was nice. There is an expansive bar and the kitchen was fully equipped with all the accoutrements you need to prepare meals from measuring spoons and cups, can openers, wine bottle openers, pots, pans, utensils, plates, etc I was really impressed it was like they thought of everything. We prepared 3 extensive meals and didn’t feel as though anything was missing from the kitchen. Just bring your seasonings and ziplock bags lol. There was also a patio or deck on each level. They looked out over the golf course and had sliding glass doors with working screens and locks. All the beds were comfortable though the twins in the loft were a tad firm to our tastes. We loved the flatscreen wall-mounted TV in the living room and the electric fireplace was low maintenance and AMAZING adding a nice ambiance and even put out some heat lol. Lots of stairs in the unit which are carpeted and we were all young so loved them. Stairs to get down to front door of unit also. Maybe not the most handicap friendly though I’m sure they have some units which are more so.
We followed the rules to a “T” despite being a rather large group of relatively young fun-loving professionals and had no qualms with the checkout process though it was too early 10am. 11am would be preferable. Upside was no wait for brunch in Harrisonburg on our way back home. Having to leave the towels and sheets by the doors was weird but no biggie. We only stayed a weekend and tidied up the unit before checking out (just how I was raised.) There was no maid service which again despite us being 8-9 people we didn’t miss for a weekend. There were plenty of pillows, towels and linens for everyone including the sofa bed etc. Overall we had a fantastic time at the resort. We saved so much by staying here compared to a newer unit. When you add in all the money we saved cooking meals instead of eating out this was the nicest and most budget friendly trip I’ve taken in a while! I found activities (Ziplining, Skiing (night), and Snowtubing) to be reasonably priced compared to other places. I’ll definitely be back here next year. Also we weren’t timeshare customers and weren’t bothered at all with any of that and we still had a nice unit to us lol. Lots of wildlife roaming around (groundhogs and deer.) Very dark winding road up the mountain but it’s well maintained. Just put the address in your GPS and follow carefully if you’re coming at night.

This is our third stay at the Mountainside Villas. Another success! Check in was a friendly, easy breeze as always. Unit was clean. Our microwave shorted out and was promptly serviced and repaired by two maintenance professionals. The only reason I cannot give them a 5-star rating is the units are furnished with older items. But that does not take away from the spaciousness. This is for two parents and 4 kids ages 17-20. If you want new and fancy, this is not for you. If you want convenient to the slopes, roomy and easy...you found it!

Bring your groceries and a football and consider taking a walk through the trails there. Skiing facilities are good for beginners and intermediate skiers. Be prepared to meet a deer or two in the backyard or while you drive. Units are equipped with most necessities but laundry facilities are not available inside the two units we rented.

I went to Mountainside villas with my husband, daughter, son-in-law and four grandchildren. The condo slept 8 so there was room for everyone. The furnishings were well maintained although a the stove was obviously older and due for replacement. Every morning the deer browsed just outside the condo. The activities available were geared for all ages, and although there was a cost for most it was reasonable. The swimming pool and gym - free to guests were clean and well maintained. I would recommend Mountainside to any family group. If you want to endure the 3 hour sales pitch you get $100.00 to spend at the resort. It is treated like cash everywhere so we were able to go out to dinner, buy souvenirs and even stamps with the $100.00 = worth the investment.

Room Tip: there are stairs involved on most of the condos so if mobility is an issue as for an handicapped sit...

This is a huge 2 BR unit with room to sleep 2 more in the loft and 2 on the sleep sofa. I have stayed at Snowshoe many times at many different locations and no 2 bedroom can match this unit. The sauna was an unexpected surprise. As was the free in unit WiFi. Friendly staff welcomed us with hot coffee in the lobby and a well planned welcome package. I agree that a shuttle is a needed addition to the resort, and washer dryer would be needed if you came to ski. Overall, I still give it a 5 star for price and will return.

Room Tip: Remember to bring towels for the water park, salt/pepper, foil, press n seal, shampoo and conditione...

This was a great place to stay for our trip to Shenandoah National Park. It's about 10-15 minutes from the park and has several good restaurants nearby (Hank’s, Café & Art). Our unit was a 2 story townhouse with 2 decks and tap water that was better than most bottled water. The first floor had a nicely equipped kitchen, large dining area, and great room with a large picture window and electric fireplace. On the first floor there was a large bathroom with a shower stall, 4 person Jacuzzi, and sauna. The second floor had a bedroom with a king size bed, a bedroom with a queen bed, and an open area with 2 daybeds. There’s also a bathroom with a tub/shower on the second floor. Though the villas are older buildings, our unit was very clean and all the interior furnishings were all new. The staff at the resort was very helpful and friendly. Since it’s a condo, guests are responsible for taking out their own trash, stripping the beds and placing used towels by the front door on departure. The only problem we had was finding the check-in area. All of the Massanutten resort check-ins are at the main welcome center on the main road except for the Mountainside Villas. For the Mountainside Villas, you have to go up the mountain to a separate welcome center which could have used better signage. Everyone on our trip agreed we would absolutely stay here again.

We always love this place. We've been going to Mountainside Villas for 18 years. Usually we go in the summer or in November. We've always missed the fall foliage. This year we happened to catch it at fall foliage peak and it was beautiful. The resort itself is loaded with activities. They have several outside pools, an indoor pool, a golf course, mini golf, a waterpark and a health club. The health club has an indoor pool, a couple of hot tubs, basketball court, tennis courts, handball courts, movie theatre for kids, game room, weight room, and tons of board games to take out. The resort also has skiing in the winter as well as tubing. Nearby you can find horse back riding and other water activities on the river. We especially love to travel a short distance to Skyline Drive and go hiking to many waterfalls which are easily accessible and relatively easy hikes. The units at Massanutten are well maintained, clean, and very spacious. Although there are restaurants on the premises, the location is near to Harrisonburg, where you can find many great restaurants and shopping mall. I would highly recommend this resort. We always have a wonderful time there.

Room Tip: We always rent the Mountainside Villas which sleep 8. The whole family has plenty of room to enjoy.
