We were here for 3 nights on business and look forward to coming back with our dog for a holiday. Staff were extremely helpful -- you ask for directions and they escort you in addition to describing how to get there. Ask for help arranging a yoga class or massage and they go out of their way to make sure you are 100% happy. Every staff person that you pass by or passes you in the hallway or lobby has a friendly greeting.
The food is awesome. Very much enjoyed the Culinary Challenge activity -- spent time with Salamander's executive chef Sean-- he and his team are amazing! Met the director of landscaping as he was working in the Culinary Gardens where they grow their own herbs and lettuces, etc
The lobby has live jazz pianist and saxophonist on weekends and loved the beautifully paneled library with books to borrow, Everyone loved the spa, I could go on and on. First class and beautiful surroundings with the friendliest staff you will find in No Va DC area.
Worth every penny to enjoy this special retreat.

Not waiting a long travel day, we decided to make the two hour drive from Annapolis to Middleburg. The travel was made miserable by traffic and rain storms, but we breathed a sigh of relief when we drove to the long driveway to the resort. It is very close to town, which is convenient. You can easily walk into town center and keep your car stored ($15/day to valet) to excursions to Goodstone Inn and Restaurant (highly recommend) or several nearby wineries. Actually the hotel offers a shuttle to three wineries in the immediate area.

The hotel is beautiful and the staff is very friendly and seeks to be helpful. Sometimes staff can be overly solicitous however. I think they have been trained to call out hellos even if no eye contact is made. Several times I had to turn around to find out who just said hello to me..... A little over done, but definitely forgivable.

We both used the spa which is quite nice. They offer a wide assortment of treatments and you do pay the normal high spa prices. If you select a treatment, please be sure to check in early to enjoy an assortment of free experiences. The only mild snafu I found was with the spa food menu. When I asked where this would be served, my attendant seemed confused. There seemed to be a slight language barrier, but I finally figure out that they only really offer service of the spa meals at pool side. There is no small cafe and because this is high allergy season, I couldn't go pool side. They ended up serving it to me in a "quiet area" in the spa. The meal itself was very tasty. I recommend the seared tuna serve on a bed of lentil and some salad greens.

The hotel itself is very nice and spacious and the same is true with the rooms. Our room overlooked the back of the property and offered beautiful sunrise views. The lawns are well manicured and offer a large outdoor chess game, croquette, and several fire pits. Everything is nicely down and the landscaping is beautiful.... See the horse carved out of the hedging.... Of course everything is equine themed. They also offer other activities and amenities. I was particularly attracted to the cooking classes they offer, but our schedule did not allow me to try this.

The Gold Cup Wine Bar is very good (see separate review), the town of Middleburg offers much in the way of antiques and boutique shops. There is no high end liquor store so if you like to have something in your room at less than hotel prices, you should plan to bring your own. ABC only offers so much. We are visiting Harriman's tonight and I will offer a review on this restaurant tomorrow, but be sure to visit Goodstone Restaurant if your finances allow (see separate review).

I really think this is the place to stay in Middleburg. Goodstone Inn looks enticing, but it is a bit out of the way. Give it a try!

Note to management: I agree with several of the critiques given thus far from Trip Advisor reviewers. I especially agree with the lukewarm coffee in the morning. However, you really should stop giving your trite, perfunctory responses to these critiques which sound like form letters. Treat each reviewers comments independently and stop with the redundant comment back to them.... It sounds like an answering machine response rather than personal and heart-felt.

PROS: The property is beautifully appointed. The surrounding grounds will need a bit of time to mature but provide a very peaceful setting. There are plenty of trails to run or walk. The lawns and gardens are very well maintained.

Rooms are large and spacious and welcoming. The darkening curtains work superbly. The bed was very comfortable. The bathrooms have two sinks, a separate tub and shower with multiple jets. There is plenty of square footage and a separate vanity counter and mirror just outside the bathroom.

Every ounce of food I had during our two and a half day visit was excellent. In some ways, the food may be the thing you remember long after your visit. The chef deserves major kudos.

ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT: The staff is sometimes intrusive. Parts of the place seem overstaffed at this point. This is a tough balance for a leading resort and I expect it to improve as the property finds its stride during its second year.

Also, parts of the bathroom were 75-80% clean but lacked the finish you would expect at a property of this caliber. Again, a small point that should get better as housekeeping becomes more consistent.

My wife and I stayed there after we got married in Annapolis. We stayed there April 26th and 27th and had a wonderful time! First and foremost, the service was incredible!! From check-in to checkout each and every staff member was there to meet our every need. The rooms were very nice and with beautiful décor. We had a great balcony with a wonderful view. They found out that we were newlyweds and a nice bottle of complimentary Champaign was delivered to our room. The food both at both the Gold Cup Wine Bar and Harriman's was fantastic. The steak and crab cakes were delicious and they had a good wine selection. The hotel grounds were beautiful, with wooded trees and they had fire pits outside to sit around and relax in the evening. We saw Michele Obama while we were there too. She was there for a weekend get away with friends. The spa facility was beautiful and we both got a massage and the service was once again impeccable. We also went horseback riding. The stable staff were great and the ride was through the woods on the property. Beautiful views and our guide was fantastic. We will definitely go back to Salamander again!

My husband and I had a wonderful time at this new resort. The room was spotless and very comfortable. It had beautiful linens and soft pillows. We liked our room on the back facing the woods. It had a nice balcony where we could sit and enjoy the woods and weather.
The large living room is beautiful . The choice of furnishings are exquisite. The service in the bar and common rooms was wonderful. We loved Amanda ! She was so personable and took care of us in every request.
The only improvement we could share with management is the service in the main dining room.
It is a higher end resort but we felt worth the money …thanks for the wonderful visit. !!
