My husband and I had an almost perfect day at Salamander's Spa and Harriman's restaurant today. The facilities are beautiful, the service was excellent but there was one problem. There were flies everywhere. It would have been one thing if they were just outside but my husband had flies in his massage room and there were flies circling our table at dinner tonight. It was hard to enjoy the infinity pool with all of the flies around but having to shoo them off of our food at dinner was disappointing.

Other than the flies everywhere, this is a wonderful resort and the staff was excellent.

On Saturday, June 28, 2014 I spent the day with close friends and family at the Salamander Resort's Equestrian Center. We enjoyed an unbeliveable trail ride on horseback. The Equestrian Center's staff, directed by Ms. Sheryl Jordon, was accomodating, professional, educational and took care of every detail and was amazing with pairing each of us up with the perfect horse. Our group consisted on 3 adults and 3 children ages 11, 12 and 13 who all had very limited experience with horses. By the time the tour was over we all felt like we had ridden our entire lives. Furthermore, the highlight of the trail ride was how the staff interacted with my 12 year old daughter who wanted desperately to ride but due to fear changed her mind as soon as she climbed into the saddle. The guides were by her side and walked with her until she was comfortable - she was able go the whole ride and enjoyed every minute of the experience. I know 1st hand how beautiful and services orientated the resort is - but in the future I will never overlook their equestrian center and staff or just finding time to visit with the horses. Thanks to Sheryl, and our guides Amanda and Tara for a day that will be etched in my memory for many years. Oh - and a shout out to my newest friend,Stryker the quarterhorse, who was able to carry my weight!!!!!

Thank you for that lovely review and your support of our equestrian program! We are delighted your daughter was able to trail ride with you and that you were able to enjoy the Middleburg hunt country. Our equestrian team is truly passionate about all aspects of horsemanship, the riding, hunting, jumping and love that they can share that with guests such as yourself and your daughter. Again, thank you for kind posting and we look forward to seeing you again in the near future.

The spa experience was amazing. They really pamper you from the plush robes to the whirlpool spa to the incredible massage. I highly recommend Salamander Spa to anyone who wants to get a way from the hustle of every day life and enjoy the high life of a spa. It is definitely a place where I will be returning!!!

We had a fabulous girls' weekend at Salamander. We have sampled a lot of spas over the years - both together and separately - and this long weekend was truly the ideal mix of exercise, spa treatments, relaxing at the pool, and exploring the cute town and nearby wineries. We found the staff across the board to be tremendous; they were warm and helpful, and everyone went above-and-beyond to make sure that we had a flawless stay. We did group exercise classes in the fitness center, enjoyed spa treatments and relaxation time at the spa, soaked in some sun around the infinity pool at the spa, explored the lovely grounds including the brand new stables, sampled the food at both Harriman's and the Gold Cup Wine Bar...and that's just right there on the premises. The Salamander staff also made it very easy to enjoy the town and surrounding area, by shuttling us to town, to restaurants, and to wineries. We loved the piano player and saxophonist that played in the evening, and we found the other guests very warm and friendly. We are both recommending Salamander to all of our friends.

When you arrive, the first staff members you meet set the tone for all the others. Friendly, helpful, and anxious to be of whatever assistance they can. The staff is the most outstanding aspect of this fine resort. This is the newest of the Salamander resorts, and the newness shows. Very nice, comfortable rooms, each with a small balcony. Excellent bathroom, with its own TV.
The main TV is large, hi-def, and very watchable.

The grounds are really nice; very well-kept. Lots of pleasant walking plus horses to ride if you like. The spa is exceptional.

The sole problem area is the food. Harrimans restaurant is very nice and, again, the staff couldn't be better. Service is excellent. The dinner food is very good. Perhaps not fully what you expect from a resort of this status, though.

Breakfast is also served at Harrimans, and the breakfasts are very good. Service is outstanding. On Sunday morning, they have a brunch. Nothing that will knock your socks off.... except for the breads, rolls, and pastries. These are exceptional! Absolute delight.

We had one lunch in the wine bar, and one was enough. I got the Derby Sandwich... turkey, ham, lettuce, tomato. I should have gone to Subway, where the sandwiches are much better. The meat was bland, the tomato slices were old and mushy. Really poor. The tacos were good, I was told. Not great, but good.

I agree with comments I've read about the saxophonist and the pianist. Really, really good.

Overall, the Salamander is very nice. Once they find a head chef equal to the pastry chef, they will experience a huge jump in overall quality.

Just returned from a Friday to Sunday stay at the Salamander Resort, which was our first stay. Everything about the Salamander is outstanding, but let me mention one aspect that totally blew us away - Ski Johnson, an outstanding jazz saxophonist and his partner on the grand piano, play every Friday and Saturday night in The Living Room, which is just steps away from the Gold Cup bar and restaurant. They play magically until 11:30, and resort guests come and go all evening, stopping for a drink and to listen to Ski improvise as his partner plays right along. Ski commented that when he met her, sorry I could not find her name, that he knew it was a once in a lifetime opportunity for him to collaborate with a true talent. Trust me, the music they make together all night long at the Salamander is worth the trip.

What else, service is delightful, as you would expect. Drinks are large and professional, and the food is as good as everyone says it is.

All in all, the Salamander impressed my wife and me and we thoroughly enjoyed our first Salamander weekend. Dancing both nights to the exceptional music, in my sandals the first night because we first went to a Friday night outdoor concert at a local winery, was a highlight of the entire stay. I found it interesting that on Saturday night half a dozen members of the staff commented that they had enjoyed watching us dance on Friday night. That was fun.

One other highlight - Salamander is far enough removed from the village of Middleburg that it does not have much light pollution after dark, so star gazing is an added benefit. Two suburb natural gas fire pits are surrounded by 16 Adirondack chairs, at each fire pit, so there is plenty of room for guests to wander out from the bar with a glass of wine to sit by a roaring fire and talk with other guests. The stars overhead are an added bonus.

I have stayed at a couple of special destination resorts that are equal to the Salamander in Middleburg but I gave never stayed at one that made such beautiful music.
